I'd be interested to hear from fans who are not from Trinity or Xavier on this question. Would you be more likely to attend a championship game in Bowling Green between the usual suspects: Trinity and Xavier, or between just one of them and a challanger from out in the state? I'm wondering if people might not be more likely to pay for the chance to see if one of the big two gets knocked off. I don't have any facts or figures; just asking the question.

Are you speaking to fans who go even if their team isn't playing? The reason I ask is because it's already set up to where Trinity & X can't meet in the finals except (potentially) every other year. So I'm just trying to figure out how it would make a difference if it was permanent.

I guess I'm asking people in a situation where their team isn't playing. So it can't apply to a T or X fan whose team didn't win that year, because a T/X final would mean that their team WAS playing.

 

Some people have said that the KHSAA was hurting themselves by taking the big Trinity/Xavier match-up away from the state finals. I'm trying to see if that would really be the case, or if more people might show to see an underdog take their shot.

Your numbers are wrong, the truth hurts your argument.

 

I found the the attendance figures for the 6A / 4A championship game for every year since 1999 with the exception of 2004. Over that time the average attendance was 15,847. The games between St. X and Trinity averaged 18,378. The games between X / T and anybody else averaged 14,160. That is a difference of 4,218. While I have no idea as to what the cost of a ticket to the championship game is, in my mind this in no way supports the assumptions that have been made that the KHSAA is costing themselves $200,000 per year. Unless I'm wrong, doesn't Papa Johns keep the concessions, and parking anyways?

 

It appears that the attendance numbers are trending downward, and I'm sure the move to 6 classes and perhaps the move to Bowling Green have contributed to that. However, I wouldn't think that a Trinity / St. X rematch would generate that much interest at this point anyhow. 48-0. Don't see much happening between now and then to change that outcome.

X and T used to have to face each other in prior to the state finals every year when there was a Jefferson Country Champion and Statewide Champion in 4A. That was before 1987 when 4A was 'fixed' so that Jefferson County was not 'guaranteed' a position in the state finals. It actually worked up until around 2000. There was plenty of variety in the finals. But since then only 3 statewide schools have made the finals. And since 2003 X and T have played in the finals every odd year.

Not a chance. Unless the other team has some kind of can't miss talent that can elevate a team (like an Eric Shelton)... I am sorry, but I am not making a special trip up to Louisville, Bowling Green, or Magoffin County to watch Trinity or St. X take on what most will perceive as a sacrificial lamb.
