Here's my tired old take on using freshman and JV results to forecast varsity expectations.

Freshman ball can be too easily dominated by one or two good players especially at the skill positions. So you could have 8 average players along with 2 to 3 strong players and still win. Secondly, we're limiting the pool to one grade which isn't true at the varsity level. So we're talking best 9th graders against best 9th graders instead of best in the school (all grades) vs best in the school. Add in that a dominant freshman player (say Cory Crane who dominated freshman ball) doesn't always turn out to be a dominant player when everyone else matures. In addition, you have kids who are good at football but decide their varsity years will be spent on other sports.

JV is even worse IMO. Schools take different approaches. Some play just their best . Some work everyone into the game. Next you have some sophomores that never see a JV field. Austin Collinsworth didn't play JV. I'd bet the MLB whose name I'm forgetting (#19) didn't play JV. So when CCH sophomores were playing on JV against Highlands' sophs who weren't as good as those playing Highlands varsity it's not an apples-to-apples comparison. Add in that JV is not always filled with great in-game coaching as it can be a teaching experience for young coaches.

Varsity ball is not even close to the game being played at the sub-varsity levels and there are too many variables to factor into future varsity success.

What Freshman and JV results tell you is what kind of talent you have coming into a program. What that program does with that talent is what translates into success or lack of success at the Varsity level. The successful programs are those which get the most out of the talent they are given.

It doesn't tell you if you have all of the pieces. That's my point. CCH has shown that over the recent years as almost all of their freshman teams have been strong.

I agree with the above posts but I will say this CCH team is by far the most talented one they have had over these 4 years. They have tons of depth.

CCH's current senior class was decent as they did hang in there were with a good Highlands team, but they were blown out by Ryle, and won on last second plays against Conner and Campbell County. AND many of the best players on that team don't even play anymore.

I don't recall a CCH frosh team dominate the way this one has. From my understanding most of these kids are 4 year players as well which is something they haven't had recently.

im wondering why dressman is still in game at 55-7 i thought cch didnt run up the score on teams

Maybe CCH was trying to show how physical THEY were.

This will just add to the good rivalry that the two schools have. Since Coach Warner took over I've never thought there was any love lost between him and CCH.

Honestly, they usually don't and I can't think of any reason why they would do such a thing? :idunno:

Coaches agreed at half to play the "twos" for the entire second half... that is what happened. CCH did play their "ones" the first series on O and D in the second half, this was also discussed by both staffs before the start of the second half; I would imagine that this was done in order to get them work before playing HHS. The ones, for both teams, played special teams the entire game. I didn't get the impression that CCH tried to run the score up at all. If Ryle did a better job of tackling, it may not have been as one sided as it was. CCH has a very nice team; no "show boating" just took care of business.

Any issue with the timeouts taken by CCH right before the half of a game that was already fairly lopsided? I can understand wanting your starters to get as much playing time as possible before a big game, but as these timeouts were taken (I believe) inside a minute to play, I thought it came off as possibly trying to run up the score.

Normally I would agree but from what I understand the reason for the timeouts was that the CCH coaches wanted to make sure that everyone got in the game. I am a Ryle supporter and fairly sure that this is accurate, it came from a pretty reliable source.

QB Way was in much of the time after half time.

I'm sure you're probably right, though I do know it was their starting QB (Dressman) who scored the TD. They may well have had backups in at other positions though. It just struck me as a bit odd, as I believe they called 2 timeouts inside the final 30 seconds with the score already 42-7. No question that this CCH freshman team is pretty darn good though. They looked absolutely huge lined up against Ryle's players.

But CCH never runs up the score........That is according to threads in another post.....Must have been agreed to prior to the game......Hmmmmm

Looking forward to Wednesday. Should be a great game! Go Birds....Beat Colonels!

Well, if the agreement was to have the "ones" play first half and "two's" play second half, then I don't think you can fault the players. CCH was just a much better team overall than Ryle. The only unusual thing I saw was intentionally stopping play with seconds to go in the half of a game that was already well out of hand, but if the Ryle coaches weren't upset with it (no idea if they were or not) then it's all good.
