I'm pretty sure he was referring to typical/past Highlands teams. Not mediocre within our state if that's what you inferred. Of course I could be wrong. Bottom line, the best Ohio has to offer is better than what Ky has to offer. Nothing wrong with that.

 

The last 3 classes that have rolled through Highlands are far from typical. If you take in say the last 20-25 teams at Highlands, this years squad is far from mediocre.

A mediocre Highlands team to me (at this point in time) would be one that is capable of winning in the playoffs but not championship caliber. Although I would agree that this team would not compare favorably to, say the last three years, I do believe they have championship potential. This squad had more questions to answer coming in and are certainly not as deep, but formidable just the same.

 

The fact that the score was closer last night than some expected, means nothing to me. Withrow showed a lot of athleticism and heart...qualities of a good football team. I was impressed that a team, traveling to HHS, coming in at 0-2, probably not playoff-bound, showed so much desire to compete to the final whistle. I thought HHS depth issues showed, with the injuries coming in and those through the course of the game, but despite that, still beat a quality opponent...hardly mediocre.

 

Regarding the comparisons to Ohio teams: why? Do all the score comparisons, Louisville v. Ohio, NKY v. Ohio, T v. Elder, Manual v. whoever...whatever. HHS probably would have lost to several Ohio teams with what they put on the field last night, but probably would have beat some quality teams on other nights or with other teams. The fact that they can compete at all (even with a mediocre team:D) justifies that Ohio football ain't all that. Let's just enjoy these quality match-ups...wish there were more!

How do you think this Highlands squad compares with some of the top teams in 4A, such as Boyle County and Bell County? Also, where would you put the 'Birds in comparison with 6A Louisville St. X and Ballard? (I'm not including Trinity in this list, since the Bluebirds scrimmaged them earlier this year and came up a TD short.)

I think the fact that it elicited a response from you is sufficient.

If this is a mediocre Highlands team, what does that say for the rest of the pack in northern Kentucky and throughout the state in 5(A). Highlands remains the team to beat. Although this year's squad may not be as loaded as the 2009 squad, they are a quantum leap above mediocre. It will be a major upset if the Birds lose a game this year in the regular season or playoffs.

Remember, mediocre Highlands team and mediocre team are two different things. If this team was anyone else in 5A the bandwagon would be overflowing but this Highlands team is not near as good as several of the teams in the recent past therefore mediocre by Highlands standards.

Withrow could go toe to toe with any team in the area on a given night. Withrow is typically inconsistent with their game. Withrow probably has 5 to 6 DI College athletes on their team. Games like this are part of Dale's master plan to see all different types of teams. Dale prides his teams on being athletic and fast. Withrow was just as athletic and faster. Ohio football has over 700 teams, so by population alone they will have more teams that are better, but I believe per capita that Kentucky is just as competitive. Kentucky's good teams can play with Ohio's good teams. Ohio just has more teams. Northern Kentucky is part of Greater Cincinnati. Greater Cincinnati has tons of talent top to bottom. How about a tournament with Northern Kentucky, Greater Cincy Catholic, Cincy Public North, Cincy Public South? Top teams from each for the area final 4.

This was my point exactly. I could see HHS scheduling the likes of Woodrow, Anderson, Wyoming, Lakotas and GCL's in the yrs to come. It will become a necessity in an effort to fill a schedule without having to break the bank on travel expense to Lex and Lou each week. Its not the fault of NKY teams, but blame can be placed on Highlands 400 kid strong JR football program which places the overall program well above everyone in the area. Before every Highlands haters starts the "this is why we hate Highlands" or "its attitudes like this that is the reason no one will schedule" the Birds, the bottom line is these are the facts. Trinity just hung a loss on Elder this weekend, last season Highlands beat Cinti. St. X., the season before, the Birds narrowly lost to Colerain, and in 2007 they beat D1, talent laden Trotwood. Parity is slowly coming between Ohio and Kentucky football. The best Kentucky teams used to be just a Harbin cash cow to the large Ohio teams, now, or in the near future, those Ohio teams may have to think twice before crossing the river looking for Harbin Points Gold.

Wow. Hate to see the moniker you would hang on the 05 and 06 teams. Mediocre is a somewhat negative term, and in no way has the 10 team done anything to deserve such negativity. JMO

Well guru, in order to do just that we must first have an understanding of where Highlands stands right now in KY, so that we may place Higlands' narrow victory against a winless, unranked Cincy team in the proper context. You have always shown yourself to be a reasonable and objective observer of football, and that's why I asked you to compare Highlands to 4A powers Boyle County and Bell County and 6A Louisville St. X and Ballard.

 

If you feel there are teams in KY besides Trinity that are better than Highlands this year, then Highlands' 34-27 win over Withrow looks a little different than if you believe Highlands is right there with Trinity at the top of KY football. Your describing HHS as mediocre by Highlands standards makes me wonder just how good you feel this HHS team really is right now.

In defense of the guru...

 

If you take mediocre to mean average or middle-of-the-road, then I guess you could argue that in recent years, Highlands has had teams better than this year's team (such as the 04, 07, 08 and 09 teams) and teams worse than this year's team (like the 01, 02, 05 and 06 squads). I don't know how it's really fair to go about making such a comparison only 4 games into the season, though. There's a whole lot of football still to be played and many people are talking seriously about the 'Birds going 10-0 (and maybe even 15-0) this year, before it's all said and done.

 

However, as malachicrunch correctly pointed out, mediocre is typically used to descibe below-expected or subpar performances; it's hard to argue that a team currently 4-0, with wins against two KY 6A schools and an Ohio Division I school, is subpar.
