Best running backs in EKY last 20 years!

Featured Replies

Obviously he'd crack my top 5. :D

I'll just go with players that I actually saw in person (in no particular order)...

Jon Chapman

Doug Howard

David Jones

Deshae Henson

Michael West

I hope I didn't forget somebody. I'll have to update my list if I think of someone else.

Henson NEVER carried the ball 40 times a game look a his yards per carry. We also had two other backs the names, Nick Jackson 1013 yards 96' and Nick Valentine 357yards 97'. So lets try to keep our post close to accurate. And I believe the score was 13-7 LynnCamp going in to half time @ M-boro 97' and Pikeville only beats us by 1 point that year, my senior year.

Henson carried the ball as many times as they could give it to him. He just wasn't that impressive to me at all and you could never convince me that he was legitametely looked at by those big schools. He was more like a Cumberland or Georgetown type player.

Are you kidding with those stats?? 1013 yards in 96 and another back with 357 in 97?? Those are the weakest argument for balance that I have ever heard.

Not too mention, I said when we played him in 1998, he was a non-factor. And that was his junior season. What does Lynn Camp being up at halftime the year before have to do with anything? If you want to be accurate, at least talk about the same year I'm talking about.

Actually in 98, was Henson best game against the Jackets, he rushed for around 150 yards, in the other years they pretty much shut him down. He had a big game that night, and was the main reason the game stayed pretty close. It seemed to me after that game was when Middlesboro turned it up, and was able to capture a state title. Yes he was legitametely looked at by big schools. Coach Mitchell travels with a group of players to University of Michigan's football camp every year, at that started with there intrest in Henson. He also went and visited Michigan the weekend of the Notre Dame and Michigan game. Quentin carried the ball alot, I think he is up there in state leaders in that stat, but Quentin also was not the entire offense, and were never a one player team. Our offense you have to have at least another good back to go other with the tailback. Shane Strunk also had big years his junior and senior year.

I never said he was the entire offense, that was someone else. I simply said that he got the ball probably more than any other back in the state.

Gross

Quentin is 5th in rushing attempts for a career. One of the big reason for that is he was a big part of the offense for 4 years. Over his career, Henson only averaged around 20 attempts a game. He is not among leaders in number attempts in a season, nor in a game, and the cutoff is 40 attempts, so according to the KHSAA records, he never carried the ball 40 times in a single game.

Here are some backs that come to mind when I think of EKY football.

Brent Coleman-Pikeville

Doug Howard-Belfry

Shawn Robbins-Bell County

David Kelley-Middlesboro

David Jones-Belfry

Mike West-Lawerence County

Arliss Beach-Ashland (possibly eastern Kentucky)

Scott Powell-Middlesboro

Scott Russell-Evarts

Durrell White-Middlesboro

Jon Chapman-Breathitt County

Quinton Henson-Lynn Camp

Eric Witherspoon-Middlesboro

Stephen Cook-Corbin

My top 5 are in bold. However, I feel very strongly that Stephen Cook and Scott Powell both would have been in the top 5 had they not had such serious injuries.

I agree with a lot of these players. Although White was a much better defensive player than offensive. I played against him his senior year (last game of his carrer) :D and he didn't do that much against us. IMO the fullback that year was a better runner than he was but White was by far the most athletic player on the field.

Actually, White rushed for just over 1600 yards that season and he didn't start runningback until the 3rd game of the season. Just ask these Lynn Camp boys, that season he put up 290 yards and 5 TDs on just 10 carries. Quite the game. That fullback was Chris Schneider and he did run very hard. They were a very powerful backfield that year. You must be from Paintsville however. You all had a great team that year.

On Durrell White, he finished 2nd in the Mr. Football his senior season.

Oh don't get me wrong, he could run with the ball! Trust me I know first hand :creepy: . I was just pointing out that Schneider got most of the carries against us for some reason and had more yardage. If that team could have established any type of passing game, they would have been very, very difficult to stop.

Henson was a great runner but he was not the best by any means. His numbers look so good because he literally got the ball 40+ times a game. There were many times I saw him play when he wasn't even the best back on the field. For instance, against Middlesboro in 1998, Henson junior year, he was a non-factor.

Everyone on here is forgetting what great backs that Middlesboro has had in the past 10 to 15 years. Eric Witherspoon in the early 90s was a specimen, just under used. Didn't make near the grades even though he was getting hounded by college coaches.

Not Questioning your intelligence or anything but how do you not include Jarrod Lawson in your bold letters.

I played against Durell White also, and i have to agree much better on the defensive side of the ball. Don't get me wrong he was a good RB, but he should be top 5 in best LB/DE in 20 years thread.

I meant to say 98' "Typo" happens some times. Everyone to their own, but I do recall Coach Herman Offensive Cordinator from the University of Michigan, coming all the way down here and picking up Quentin at my parents house and going out to eat at Knox Co.'s own Hillbilly's Restarunt.

Quite frankly, because Jarrod was slow and was only successful because of the system. He was a solid high school back but to be in my top 5 would mean I would want the ball in his hands more than the hands of these other guys and that just isn't happening.

He should be on my list though. I'm sorry I left him off.

Herman is Michigan's Defensive Coordinator. :thumb:
