To me it doesn't sound racist at all. What he is saying is not all people who are on welfare or unemployment are the stereotypes that some people try to make them out to be. Of course there are some who are taking advantage of the system but everyday hardworking people are having a tough time during the economic turn down.

Then again his exact words were "they’re not minorities and they’re not defective and they’re not all the things you’d like to insinuate that these programs are about — these are average, good American people". Had he left the "these are not minorities" out and just said "they’re not defective and they’re not all the things you’d like to insinuate" it would be a lot different.

 

Again, I maintain that if a Republican would have said it, it would have been a bigger story.

I agree. Like I just said, I'm not purely convinced it was racist. It was sure a poor way of conveying his message, the more I think about it the less I'm convinced it was racist.

This is the key sentence to me. This is what I was talking about when I mentioned stereotypes. There are some who claim that the only people on unemployment insurance and welfare are minorities and people who are too lazy to work. I think that is what he was talking about.

 

I never paid attention to whether the gentleman was a democrat or republican. I just listened carefully to what he said.
