Here's Why You Learn to Diagram Sentences

Featured Replies

Remember diagramming sentences and complaining about it?

Magic Johnson after game 1:

"The defense by the Lakers were outstanding."

Had he remembered grammar rules he would have remembered that the verb goes with the subject and NOT the noun in the prepositional phrase.

Even if you have millions you still need to speak properly.

Don't even get me started on Mark Jackson saying during the game that someone had "aten" instead of "eaten."

I'm sorry Clyde, but I feel like diagramming sentences, was, and always will be, the most pointless task I was ever asked to do in school.

So you learn to diagram sentences just in case you end up in the booth after a few hundred mil are already in the bank???

I don't need to learn to diagram sentences to learn to talk good.

I never learned how to diagram sentences. Regardless, I know that those quotes are not grammatically proper.

And we have a winner!

And we have a winner!

Good stuff man. I am an English major and love to read so I feel like that in itself has allowed me to speak well. I do have an occasional slipup but listening to folks in the public eye just torture the language is hilarius.

Some of my favorites are hearing people say we was or them newspapers or done did. Diagramming sentences is very important so you understand not just word order but also what those words actually are that you are uttering.

I am in COMPLETE agreement with Clyde! The two most important things I feel I learned in school were phonetics and diagramming sentences. Both have carried me a long way in life.

Correct.

Regardless of how much money you have in the bank it says a lot to others when you cannot speak properly. Of course, I doubt Magic is going to lose any sleep over this but to 99.999% of the world who do not have a 100M in the bank you might as well look like you paid attention in school.

Hey Clyde, why don't you diagram an Emmitt Smith sentence?

I agree with you and Clyde. While grammar somewhat bored me in school, I recognized its importance and learned it well. You would think that those who appear on television regularly would make a greater effort to speak properly.
