I have said this for years and years, sports are for fun, getting a great education last a lifetime!

 

I was just wondering as I sometimes do but how many of the young men on any of these lists who are playing D1 or who could play D1 will make a living from playing Pro Basketball?

 

I love seeing young men like Chris Gerwe and Logan Carney (I know there are others) of CovCath and Ryle who are both very good baseball player but who will be attending the University of Kentucky and Eastern Kentucky University on Academic Scholarship. These young men understand the value of getting a great education while enjoying their high school years, playing sports!

 

Congrats to the young men and women who can excel both in the classroom and in sports, for these young men and women will be our leaders one day soon.

 

There are also a few kids who turned down the possibility of playing at a higher level or even scholarship money to attend the best academic schools. I know the Trinity kids Epley and Corbett both had scholarship opportunities and elected to go the schools where they received less money in order to attend some of the top academic schools in the country.

 

In their cases, despite ACT scores in the 30's and top 5% class rankings, I seriously doubt they would have been admitted to Williams or Johns Hopkins without basketball so sports can help open doors that would be shut otherwise!

Josh Sewell to Miami (Ohio), not sure they're the redskins anymore rather the redhawks.

Good thread. I hope they all remain at their respective schools for 4 years and not transfer down or head back to Kentucky as that trend continues. Another name to mention now as kids going D1 and transferring down is Eric Mosely heading to JUCO.

Congrats to Colt. It is my understanding that one receives an "Appointment" to the Air Force Academy. Though I'm sure athletics played a part in him securing his appointment, it is by no means an athletic scholarship. He could stop lacing them up after his freshman year and still not have to worry about his "scholarship" being revoked. Unlike an athletic scholarship which is renewed yearly, I believe he's signed up for a bit more than 4 years with the Air Force.

Nope, its a athletic scholarship. He is not committed to anything until after he starts his junior year at the Academy. He will attend the Air Force Academy Prep School for the first year and then go into the actual Academy after that. You are not committed to any service until you attend classes on the first day of your Junior year. It has nothing to do with signing up for service like you would in a normal setting.

If they pass this then they are admitted to the Air Force Academy. It does not guarantee them a roster spot, nor are they guaranteed an appointment in the 2nd year. I believe they usually use this for athletes, and it is a good way to establish a pool to chose from.

So, he's going to the Air Force Academy Prep School, and not the Air Force Academy. Got it! If I understand correctly, going to the Prep school doesn't lock you into going to the Academy. I believe he could still attend another institution after the 1 year of prep school, just as with all prep schools.

 

When I looked at the preps schools site, they also mention appointments, and not scholarships.

No this is not how the process goes. After being very close to the situation for the last few years I am well aware of how everything works including the Prep school.

The we will have to disagree, I must have been dealing with another country's Air Force and Army academies??
