April 23, 201016 yr According to Rivals... Under Calipari: John Wall (1) DeMarcus Cousins (2) Eric Bledsoe (23) Daniel Orton (22) Jon Hood (40) Darnell Dodson (JC) Brandon Knight (1) Doron Lamb (21) Enes Kanter (NA) Stacey Poole (27) Michael Gilchrist (1) Marquis Teague (2) Under Tubby and Billy G ('02-'08): DeAndre Liggins (28) Darius Miller (42) Patrick Patterson (17) Alex Legion (44) Derrick Jasper (38) Jodie Meeks (39) Perry Stevenson (63) Joe Crawford (9) Randolph Morris (10) Rajon Rondo (25) Kelenna Azubuike (NA) Antwain Barbour (JC) Note: 5-star prospects are bolded. The twelve players Calipari has signed, or got commits from, vs. the top 12 recruits of the previous seven years. The average class ranking of Cal's players is 14. 9 of 12 are 5-star prospects. Five top 5 players...three #1's and two #2's. 9 of 12 top 30 players...probably 10 of 12 when the rankings come down for Kanter. The average class ranking of the prior years is 31.5. 4 of 12 are 5-star prospects. Two top 10 players...five top 30 players.
April 23, 201016 yr I know there is a lot of criticism and I am frustrated to with having 4 1 and done players. (Not that I aint happy for all of them, I am) But once we get a little more continuity with only losing a couple 1 and dones most years and hopefully having some guys like Poole and Lamb for 3 or 4 years, I think we can really have something very special.
April 23, 201016 yr According to Rivals... Under Tubby and Billy G ('02-'08): Kelenna Azubuike (NA) Surprising to me that the 3-time leading scorer in the state of Oklahoma wasn't ranked. I think I remember that statistic being right. Definitely nice to have a lot of top ranked players wanting to come to UK.
April 23, 201016 yr I believe Orton and Hood actually should get credited to Billy G. I believe they both committed to him before he was let go.
April 23, 201016 yr What made Tubby so special was that he could take guys like Bobby Perry and Lukas Oroiuasajdojat and mold them into 5 star prospects.................................:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
April 23, 201016 yr Author Surprising to me that the 3-time leading scorer in the state of Oklahoma wasn't ranked. I think I remember that statistic being right. Definitely nice to have a lot of top ranked players wanting to come to UK. I'm sure he was. The Rivals rankings were only availabe back to '03, so I couldn't include Azubuike. Only that he was a 4-star prospect, which would put him anywhere from 30-60 most likely.:idunno: Also, Barbour was a pretty highly touted JC guy that year I believe. Getting him was a big deal at the time, but ultimately didn't work out as well as we'd hoped.
April 23, 201016 yr Azubuike was #31. Here are some other top recruits brought in by Tubby: 1998 Tayshaun Prince #12 Jules Camara #31 1999 Keith Bogans #2 Marvin Stone #5 2000 Cliff Hawkins #36 Jason Parker #15 ... ranked in the top 10 by a couple analysts 2001 Rashaad Carruth #21 Chuck Hayes #46 Also, not in the list in the earlier post is Alleyne who was rated at #48 in 2003.
April 23, 201016 yr Author I believe Orton and Hood actually should get credited to Billy G. I believe they both committed to him before he was let go. Calipari did have to convince Orton to remain committed I believe. But, if you want to credit he and Hood to the previous guys, that would only widen the gap for Calipari. That would drive his average recruit ranking up to a top 10 player in his class (9.75 to be exact). It would bring the previous years to a 31.4, up by one tenth. Although it would add a top 30 guy, while taking one from Cal. The sad thing is, take away that monster class that landed in Tubby's lap and turned out to be a disaster and it's much, much worse. Rondo, Morris and Crawford provide a big boost.

Alleyne was #80 on the rivals rankings. :idunno: Regardless, my purpose was to point out the drastic turnaround in UK's recruiting in Calipari's short time by comparing all of his guys (12 or 10 if you minus Hood and Orton) to the best 12 over the past 7 years, because that's how far back the rivals list went, and that's probably a good starting point for UK's recruiting woes.

Rondo, Morris and Crawford provide a big boost. Agreed. There is no doubt, as you can see in my post with Tubby's other recruits, that Tubby's quality of recruits declined as his tenure at UK went on. Tubby's best class was 1999 and second best was 2004. Here is a ranking of the best recruiting classes from 1998-2008. Rank Team Rank Total Start End 1 North Carolina 429 2006 2006 2 Duke 421 2002 2002 3 UCLA 388 2008 2008 4 Duke 351 1999 1999 5 UCLA 349 1998 1998 6 Kansas 346 2005 2005 7 Duke 339 2005 2005 8 Ohio State 338 2006 2006 9 North Carolina 325 2005 2005 10 Duke 321 2006 2006 11 Texas 302 2004 2004 11 Connecticut 302 2006 2006 13 Kansas 292 2003 2003 14 Kentucky 290 1999 1999 15 North Carolina 287 2002 2002 16 Arizona 281 1998 1998 17 Texas 276 2006 2006 18 Virginia 275 1999 1999 19 Michigan 274 1999 1999 20 Syracuse 272 2007 2007 Source: http://statsheet.com/bhsb/teams_by_stat?stat=rank_total&years=1
April 23, 201016 yr Author Yeah, Tubby didn't do too bad for the first half of his tenure. Thanks for the link...I'll have some fun with that page sometime.
April 23, 201016 yr And for those that have any doubt that talent wins, consider this list of recent champions and where their recruiting class ranked: Rank Team Rank Total Start End 1 North Carolina 429 2006 2006 ..... 2009 NCAA Champion 2 Duke 421 2002 2002 3 UCLA 388 2008 2008 4 Duke 351 1999 1999 ... 2001 NCAA Champion 5 UCLA 349 1998 1998 6 Kansas 346 2005 2005 .... 2008 NCAA Champion 7 Duke 339 2005 2005 8 Ohio State 338 2006 2006 9 North Carolina 325 2005 2005 ... 2005 & 2008 NCAA Champion 10 Duke 321 2006 2006 ... 2010 NCAA Champion 11 Texas 302 2004 2004 11 Connecticut 302 2006 2006 13 Kansas 292 2003 2003 14 Kentucky 290 1999 1999 15 North Carolina 287 2002 2002 ... 2005 NCAA Champion 16 Arizona 281 1998 1998 17 Texas 276 2006 2006 18 Virginia 275 1999 1999 19 Michigan 274 1999 1999 20 Syracuse 272 2007 2007 24 Florida 262 2007 2007 .... 2007 NCAA Champion Talk all you want about how great Coach K is as a coach, but his real value is as a recruiter. He has by far dominated the recruiting battles over the past 10 years. That is why Calipari is going to get his title at UK. Talent wins and Cal is bringing in more talent than anyone right now. It might take 2-3 years or more depending on who stays and who goes, but he can not be denied a title if he keeps recruiting like he is.
April 23, 201016 yr Like him or not, you have to give credit to BCG for Orton. He has already committed to UK under BCG.
