A very long season, Yanks won tonite.

 

Joba looked good tonight. If they put Hughes in the bullpen it could help a lot. If they have to start him they need to pick up some bullpen help. I mainly started the thread on Sunday because of the intensity of the game. It felt like October in April. Tonight was just as intense. People that want to complain about the ESPN Red Sox/Yankees bias must not watch many of the games. Every time it is two of the best teams in the league flat out getting after each other.

People can complain all they want, but Red Sox/Yankees keeps baseball alive and going. Without these two organizations being strong, baseball struggles to stay afloat.

No doubt the Sox/Yanks are the two most popular teams and really help the game with their great rivalry. I feel like you could say that with a lot of sports though.

In other big American sports I am not so sure. Football is popular for a multitude of reasons (fantasy football, parity, etc.).

 

The NBA is only as successful as the stars which are in the league.

 

Sure the NFL is better if the Steelers and Cowboys are successful, or the Lakers and Celtics are doing well in hoops, but their success is not tied to the overall success of the sport.

Keith Law made a pretty good point this morning that in reality only Toronto, Baltimore, and Tampa Bay have a good reason to complain about it, as they are the only ones who directly compete with them.

 

If you look at the revenue sharing you could almost argue that a lot of teams benefit from the bloated payrolls of both teams.

No doubt they benefit. It has been a good thing for baseball as more and more teams are staying competitive longer in to the season. Some still do not spend their money efficiently though (or at all) which is the another issue in itself.

I agree Joe, I didn't know last nites game was on MLB network until the 8th. I was going to ESPNNews for updates. Tonite ESPN2.

 

I just hate it when you are up 5-1 in a game buts thats also why I love the game so much. BullPen will be the key for the Yanks just like it is for any club.

I'm in Destin, Florida for my son's baseball team spring break. He wanted to go ride go-carts and play putt putt so I had him and a couple of his teammates drop me off at Buffalo Wild Wings while they used the car so I could catch part of the game. I saw the Yankees take the lead after Scutaro's error and listend to the rest of the game on XM as I was taking them back to the team condo. MLB Network's coverage seemed pretty good, I didn't have audio so I didn't hear the announcers.

My point is that the current ownership and management of the Red Sox is every bit as good, if not better, than the Yankees. That was never the case throughout most of the history of the rivalry. They are much closer to equals now than what Yankees fans want to believe.

 

BTW, great pitcher's duel going on right now between Pettitte and Lackey. Both look very sharp for their first time out. Another electric atmosphere tonight.
