And....that's a purely objective opinion, an appreciation of another person's beauty....nothing more.

To borrow an argument I've used in the college basketball forum: It's just a place. It's not special or sacred because of the place itself, but because of the people involved with its history.

 

And again, it's just a place. I can't monitor a cemetery 24-7 to make sure nothing bad ever happens to my parents' graves. And even if someone does do something such as urinate upon it, while I might be initially put off by it, at the end of the day it's still just a place, and their actions does nothing to diminish the fond memories I would have of my parents.

 

Couldn't help but think of something with regard to your "it's just a place" argument. Any problem if for her next inspiring video Ms. Badu decides to take a crew to Auschwitz, quickly film herself stripping down in front of whomever, and simulate someone dying in the gas chamber? I mean, Auschwitz is "only a place", right? Just a bunch of semi-dilapidated buildings, crumbling stones, and grass, right? Nothing disrespectful towards the events that occurred there or the painful memories that that place conjures for many people, right?

 

Sorry, but places are important. Very important. They are indeed part of our memories and our history and our heritage and culture. They represent important times and events in our lives that help memorialize and honor the people associated with these events. It is not just about "memories." And cemeteries are not just pieces of sod with a box in the ground and worms eating at decayed bones. Your "just a place" argument is not only silly, but inappropriate. You should walk up to some Auschwitz survivor sometime and tell them it was "just a place." I'd love to see how many teeth you have left after that comment.

And your argument is silly on all counts. The comparison more than valid.

 

1) If you don't see her actions as disrespectful to Kennedy, that's a shame. She stripped down nude in a place that is considered a national historic landmark and then ridiculously simulated his assassination.

 

Cemeteries are generally considered public places also. And urinating on a marble headstone hardly "desecrates" the scene, be it temporarily or otherwise.

 

2) Yes, Dealey Plaza is a public place. But there are still laws that govern and restrict your actions in public. You can't just do or say whatever you want. And she wasn't just "present" in a public place - she was taking some action. Remember the whole stripping down naked part? There are laws concerning that.

 

3) Be serious. That's silly beyond silly. Try that explanation in a courtroom when you get arrested for public indecency. Seriously, go walking down the nearest busy street you can find, slowing strip off your clothes, and hang your Johnson out there for the world to see. Then tell the judge you really were only stripping in a figurative and not literal sense. I'm sure he'll buy it.

 

4) Honestly, I don't care to see the whole video. I saw that part that she wanted me - and everyone else - to see. She didn't have to do it this way. She could have filmed it in a studio. She choose to do so in the manner she did in order to make it a PR stunt.

 

She may be the greatest artist out there today. I'm too stuck in my middle ages and listening to 80's music to know. I'll admit to that part. This has nothing to do with her music or my inability to enjoy her music. It was distasteful, classless, disrespectful, and completely needless. Period. And I'd apply the same standard to any of my 80's music artists who pulled the same selfish stunt.

Just out of morbid curiousity:p I might listen to some of her songs. What style of music does she play? Frankly, anything other than 80's music style or pop country and I don't have much patience, but that's a personal problem and I'm willing to admit to that.

She is typically classified as neo-soul, which is basically how it sounds. She has a lot of jazz stylings in her music/voice as well.

 

I would definitely start at Mama's Gun as I consider it her best album (though Jim or RM may disagree).

You realize that I have no earthly idea what "neo-soul" is, right? I've never even heard the term before. I know "rock", "pop", "country", "jazz", "rap", and "classical." And 4 of those styles I don't particularly care for. My musical tastes like somewhere between Rick Springfield and Keith Urban. And, yes, I agree that is pathetic. :lol:

Haven't heard of of one of them, though I do know that Maxwell House is a coffee brand and perhaps Lauryn Hill is Hank Hill's niece on 'King of the Hill'.

I switched to country in the late 80s and after that, I just don't listen to any pop/rock period. I bet I wouldn't recognize 2% of all non country artists from 1990 forward either by name, sight or sound.
