March 28, 201016 yr I mean this to be a serious topic. I am a UK fan but I find some UK fans virtually intolerable. I know there are numerous UK and non-UK fans alike who know what I speak of. I believe it is admirable to be a passionate supporter of your team. However, many UK fans have gone way over the proverbial Big Blue edge. My sainted mother, who has absolutely no interest in any sporting event other than UK BBall, began her trek to insanity during the Pitino era. He was a god in her eyes. He saved KY basketball. Her house is a shrine to Kentucky basketball. I find this strange for a nearly 70 year-old woman who has no interest in sports. However, mom's loyalty is mild compared to the idolatry of others. At least mom didn't name me, my sister, or her dog after a UK player or coach. Thank God she never scheduled her life(and ours) around Kentucky games. Just as LRCW said last night, I am a big UK fan and always root for them wholeheartedly. However, when they lose, I am over it and looking forward to the Reds season. I will not get on Facebook and trash players or coaches. I realize that a ballgame is just that--a game. There are many others things in life that deserve much more focus and empathy. It took me awhile to get to the question, but here it is: What is it about UK fans(or about a fifth of them anyways) that irks you the most? If you are a non-UK fan, why do you find yourself rooting against UK just because of their fans? Please give an example of something you have seen or heard to support your position. I know several people who would probably cheer for UK were it not for the obnoxious UK fans. Just what is it about UK fans that gets under your skin the most???
March 28, 201016 yr The 18%ers are the most obnoxious fans in all of sports. UK does nothing wrong in their eyes....ever. They also have an elitist air about themselves that may or may not be deserving depending on how you rate the greatness of a college basketball program. I have despised UK ever since I was a kid. I grew up in Bowling Green and my father worked at WKU and we had season tickets for the basketball team. UK would never schedule a game with WKU. Louisville played WKU every year so as a kid I took it that UK felt they were too good or too scared to play WKU so I grew up with resentment toward UK. As I got older I actually attended UK as a student. I was there when Roderick Rhodes transferred(dismissed) from the team to clear room for Ron Mercer which was one of the strangest things I had ever seen and the 18ers all said he had done nothing in 2 years so they were okay with booting him off the team. I also think Tubby deserved better. While UK fans have tremendous passion, pride and as Dicky V. says the most knowledgable basketball fans on the planet..... I can't stand the 18%ers and they ruin any chance of me rooting for UK basketball.
March 28, 201016 yr I also despise when I have on a Duke shirt and people cover up the D and the E and say now my shirt looks right. So corny and annoying. Happens all of the time like it's a bad joke passed around the state. It'd be nice to see UK fans get over themselves for a change. Just because I live in KY doesn't mean I have to like UK basketball.
March 28, 201016 yr What is life like for an "18%er" right now? I wonder... The deepest, darkest pit of depression. Either that or uncontrollable anger.
March 28, 201016 yr The deepest, darkest pit of depression. Either that or uncontrollable anger. So something like this???
March 28, 201016 yr Just because I live in KY doesn't mean I have to like UK basketball. The implied obligation that I should, as a Kentuckian, be a Wildcat fan is annoying to the nth degree. I shouldn't have to apologize or fight for who I cheer for, yet I feel as though I'm forced to by some of the flock. The nasty, virulent racist stuff I've heard over the years from some of them makes it easy to enjoy their suffering.
March 28, 201016 yr Author I think a lot of UK fans are wayyyyyyy too sensitive. Even on forums like this one, you don't dare even insinuate a negative about UK without expecting a reprisal from an overly sensitive fan.
March 28, 201016 yr Things that bother me most about UK fans, and not all of these apply to the sane UK fans. 1. UK fans will never admit that the other team was better. They only lose because of something they did, not because of something the other team caused them to do. 2. UK fans never see that their players are guilty of anything. It's always a bad call when UK gets called for a foul or when the other team isn't called for one. I'm pretty fair when I watch a game and I can usually admit that my teams guys are guilty when the whistle blows, and at times I'll even say man we got away with one there. 3. The bandwagon UK fanatics that only come out of the closet when the team is 20-1 and then talk more trash than all other UK fans. I root against UK mainly because I go to another SEC school, and UK fans irk me for above reasons. They did growing up too and I spent most of my childhood cheering for Louisville.
March 28, 201016 yr So something like this??? I would think there were quite a few episodes across the bluegrass like that last night.

The nasty, virulent racist stuff I've heard over the years from some of them makes it easy to enjoy their suffering. I feel the same way. I can honestly say that when I was a student at UK, my fellow students were way more accepting of who I chose to root for than non students. I too have heard a whole lot of nasty, racist and homophobic remarks as well.
March 28, 201016 yr Author I wonder if cases of domestic violence go up after a big season-ending loss? I do not mean this flippantly at all. I would suspect that domestic violence increases exponentially in the days following a season-ending loss like last night.
