I can't believe how close the thread is. Shelby Valley split with Elliott Co. last year and obviously improved tremendously from last year. Every player got a whole lot better. I think a big advantage this year's Shelby Valley team would have over Elliott Co. is on the boards.

No way it's 15 or more, granted on a given day the outcome could have gone either way but not a 15 point victory! Outside of the Mason game at the Fieldhouse can't recall Elliott ever getting ran out of the gym so just can't see that happening to them.

Shelby Valley had a little easier road to the finals rather than Elliott's road last year. And IMO Elliott beat a better Shelby Valley team last year when it counted in the State Tournament. Put Shelby Valley in the bottom bracket last year and the top bracket this year and I think you have a different outcome. But Shelby Valley is State Champions and that is something that they can never take away from those young men, they deserve all the recognition they get.

I think the real question in this debate is whether you would want Justice or Faulkner running the show for your respective school? What a choice to have between two great high school point guards!

I think the difference between the two teams is on the defensive end. Both Shelby Valley teams ('09 and '10) were better defensively than Elliott County.

 

Even though they split the two games between them in '09, I think you have to give Shelby Valley the edge. The Wildcats were up by double digits for much of the game at the All A Classic before a bunch of missed free throws allowed Elliiott to creep back into the game. Elliott evened the score at the Sweet 16, but I think Shelby Valley (on balance) comes out ahead in the two games.

I think the real question in this debate is whether you would want Justice or Faulkner running the show for your respective school? What a choice to have between two great high school point guards!

I still would have to say Shelby Valley was too big all around for Elliot. Throw Timmy Knipp as a senior on there and I go with Elliot (but he was only a sophomore).

Yeah I was just comparing the two primary ball handlers, I realize Ethan and Evan shared duties but one was a true point while the other was more spot up on the wing!

Why is this even a question? Yes what Elliot Co. did as a small school was GREAT! I am from a small school, so I really understand how great that is. However it seems like people on here keep talking about them being like one of the best teams ever. How could you take Elliot over Shelby. Elliot was not the best team in the state two years ago, they weren't the best team last year, and probably wouldn't have been last year. Elliot was a great team, however this Shelby team should be talked about even more. They were 3 and 0 against Elliot, and won 2 All A Titles and now a State Title. I don't even know how you can compare the two.

They split their two meetings in 08-09, with SV winning in the Class A semis by 3 & Elliott winning in the Sweet 16 quarterfinals by 6. The game they played most previous to that was in 06-07, when Elliott ended SV's season in the Sweet 16 opening round game, winning by 13.

 

Having said that, it would be hard to take Elliott over Shelby Valley, since SV won the whole thing this year.

Because even though they're both All A mountain schools, Elliott's enrollment is almost half of Shelby Valley's. Not sure on the exact numbers, but I was thinking SV was around 600 & Elliott around 300.

 

Either way, they're both good stories.

I think you're right on Randy, most people I speak with have a hard time considering Shelby a true class-A school. Other people say Elliott's popularity with people centered around their style of play and say the fast-paced style is Kentucky's pace.

They are both 2 great teams and both fun to watch. I think Shelby Valley has to be the better team if the comparison is this year’s Shelby Valley team and last year’s Elliott County team. Shelby Valley's 2010 team is better than Shelby Valley's 2009 team. They split last year, so it can not even be said that either was better than the other last year. But with this year's Shelby Valley team winning the state tournament I don't think anyone can back up a statement that Elliott was better. Then the state titles being 2 Class A's and 1 State Championship for Shelby Valley and no titles at all for Elliott County gives a huge edge to Shelby Valley. Shelby Valley is a good story and maybe an even better story than Elliott, but by the nucleus of the Elliott team being a year ahead of the Shelby Valley nucleus they were always in Elliott’s shadow until they graduated. I loved to watch both teams and both are going to be a great part of the Kentucky High School Basketball history.
