March 13, 201016 yr You're not getting my argument man. They've never been in this position before with having drafted so well for so many years. If they won't spend money in FA's then they are going to spend with their own players either. Money is money. As far as being a contender I like alot of teams chances over them in any playoff game. The Colts, Pats, Steelers and Chargers are infinitely better at QB IMO, and usually have a good formula for a good defense which will usually give them a chance. The Jets are going to continue to get better and better especially on defense. The Ravens are old, but they have a good organization and will rebuild quickly in the future. I like what the Dolphins are doing (I think they do more with less than anyone in the NFL) and the potential the Titans and Texans have. I don't see how going forward the Bengals are going to be able to keep up or pass some of these teams and that's just in the AFC. They're not going to spend the money in Free Agency to do it and building through the draft is a slow and painful process. Don't get me wrong the Bengals have a nice nucleus, I just don't think that the draft is the answer by itself. Any expert around the league would tell you that you build through the draft. Sure, FA is great to add a piece here and there but drafting well is THE key.
March 13, 201016 yr Author I would buy the building through the draft more if they had traded some of your picks. That is how you build through the draft successfuly. The Bengals have had LOTS of nice picks that they could have packaged but didn't.

March 13, 201016 yr The Bengals got beat by an underrated Jets team that almost made the Super Bowl. If not for Shank Graham, they are right in it late in the 4th. The Pats were embarrassed at home by the Ravens (who the Bengals beat twice). The Eagles were also blown out in the first round. But you are right, the Bengals were the worst team to make it    Way to not let your dislike for them cloud your judgement. I forgot if you don't worship the Bengals everything that's said has to be biased..... I'm sorry but I don't think they would have beaten any of those teams. They just didn't have it in them at the end of the season. The Patriots would have been the most likely for them to beat though, so I'll retract my statement and say they would have beaten them. Happy now? They also had a ton of injuries everywhere last year. The team that ended the year, was not the same team that basically did great to set them up for the playoffs. They showed what they can do when healthy. I know there are always injuries in the NFL, however the Bengals had the injury bug him them in more key spots than most teams. On defense alone, only four guys played every game. By the end of the year half of their opening game starters were not playing on defense anymore. Then on offense both their top TE's got hurt before the year even started, and then the sad passing of Chris Henry. So to look at how they were at the end of the, just simply is not a good thing to base your opinion on. They showed how good they were before all that stuff happened, and they will have those guys back and hopefully should be better on offense this year too. What have those teams you mentioned done, that makes them so much better than a team than they were worst than last year? Were they worse? Steelers get no argument from me, but I don't expect them to be bad two years in a row. By the end of the year the Ravens were just as good if not better than the Bengals, injured or not. Patriots just weren't the same last year but I think they'll figure something out they have a great organization and coach, two things the Bengals do not have (though I don't think Marvin is as bad as some have thought). Without horrible a horrible start the Titans would have been in the playoffs and would have been one of the hottest teams in it having won 8 of 10 after starting 0-6. You have to improve alot each year in the NFL, sorry if I don't buy the Bengals doing it. They may prove me wrong, but history doesn't suggest that they will. Any expert around the league would tell you that you build through the draft. Sure, FA is great to add a piece here and there but drafting well is THE key. In this day and age you have to add some key pieces via FA's. Obviously the core of every team is the draft, but you've got to add some guys in FA, unless you draft like the Colts or someone. I don't see Peyton Manning, Dallas Clark, Reggie Wayne, Dwight Freeney on the Bengals roster. Have they drafted well enough to get it done? I'm not buying a Super Bowl from this roster. Um, what? If you have lots of nice picks and trade them, then how do you build through the draft? I think he's talking about packaging picks and moving up, or moving down and adding picks.

I still don't agree with you, however I am watching the UK game right now and don't feel like continuing this argument. We shall wait till the season and see how things go.

March 13, 201016 yr Author Um, what? If you have lots of nice picks and trade them, then how do you build through the draft? Instead of taking a David Klingler, Kijana Carter or Akili Smith with a high draft pick you trade back for multiple picks that are just as talented if not more. It's common sense really unless you honestly think you have a guy that's a no brainer. The Pats do it all the time. You also have the ability to trade for better players because you have picks to trade. It takes thinking outside the box something you nor Mike Brown do I guess. I'm not saying do it ever time but I do think the Bengals have missed a lot of opportunities to build. Like GT said it takes scouting too.
March 13, 201016 yr Like GT said it takes scouting too. Scouting is tough when you don't have any scouts...
March 13, 201016 yr Author Scouting is tough when you don't have any scouts... Exactly! So we'll do the next best thing. Take a 7 catch guy with a rap sheet and see what happens
March 15, 201016 yr It's like that time they traded down, passed on Jackson and picked Perry... One of my favorite Bengals draft highlights.
