Best teams in the 9th region next year?

Featured Replies

It is hard to predict who will be the best teams in the 9th next year until '10-'11 school registrations are locked in. Without offering any type of editorial opinion on the transfer issue, the fact remains that the better 9th region teams over the past several years have benefited greatly from the addition of transfer students. While a transfer may not guarantee a weak team will be cutting down the BOK Arena nets next March, the addition of a solid player can propel a good team over the hump to greatness.

Quite true Flotsman and I am, as I am sure you are not either, implying anything was done improper or illegally, just stating fact:

Would Newport have won without Foster this year?

Would Boone County have won without Moss this year?

Would Holmes have won last year without the Johnson's last year?

If you are being honest, the answer is no!

None of the three above teams IMVHO would have won the Ninth without the transfer's, so Flotsman comment is spot on!

I am not a Holmes fan and it irritates the heck out of me that people lump the Johnson's into this transfer talk. I can only imagine how Holmes fans feel about it. Let's say "Johnny" went to Blessed Sacrament till the 8th grade and even plays middle school football for the CCH teams. Then he decides he wants to go to St. X. so he goes there freshman year. But he doesn't like St. X. so he comes back to CCH his sophomore year. Is he going to be labeled a transfer his whole high school career?

To play at St. X Johnny would have had to move to Ohio as per the OHSAA rules, to play in Ohio you must live in Ohio! So......

No where in my comment did I imply there was anything wrong in any of the players doing what they did, but all are transfers, per KHSAA rules. How can you say it was anything else?

Transfer: 1 : to move to a different place, region, or situation; especially : to withdraw from one educational institution to enroll at another

:idunno: But, I think that is what they did!

The OHSAA rule is true....but there are ways around this. I know of a few stories and 2 specifically who have went to CCH feeder schools then went to Ohio schools to and went on to play sports. Condos, apartments, grandparents, aunts and uncles and even 2nd homes all have in the past played a part in making this happen.

theoldguy is correct that I am implying anything was done improper or illegally. I am glad that Ricardo and J.J. played for Holmes. I enjoyed watching them play and believe they represented the 9th region admirably down state. Also, I think fans tend to underestimate the contribution B. Housley made to the Bulldogs' championship season. Hey...if a certain 8th grader who may or may not have played at the high school level this year decides to matriculate in Park Hills next August instead of a few miles down the Dixie Highway you won't hear any complaints from me.

My cut and paste left out a word. Theoldguy is correct that I am not implying...

Substitute any Ky. school you want for St. X. in my example. That is not the point. And I am not making any inference about right, wrong or the KHSAA rules. The point is the Johnsons were Holmes kids their entire career except one year and I don't think it is right to characterize them as transfers. There are enough other examples out there for you to use without including them. And I am not pointing the finger at you. I have seen them labeled transfers many times on BGP in various threads and I just don't think it is right.

For the record, I have heard nary a tweet about any CCH player and their future plans.

But, by defination of the word, they are transfers. They were eligible and played three years at Holmes, so everything must have been on the up and up. But, they did begin high school one place and then, what's that word....oh yeah, they transferred.

They are what they are....transfers and state champions.:dancingpa

You know it's funny but nary a poster has answered my questions about would any of the three teams I mentioned being the Ninth Region Champion if they didn't have the transfers?

It all goes back to Flotsman comment about having to wait to see who does what in the Ninth, before saying who is or isn't the best teams in the Ninth next year!

None of them would have been.

So to be a "transfer" I assume you all are labeling any player who didn't play freshman year for their high school as a transfer? And then any player who played freshman year at their high school but played sports in grade 1-8 in another high school's feeders is not a transfer? Seems a little petty to me. The starting point for me is I only include in transfer talk a player who played varsity at one high school and then transferred to another high school. Did the Johnson's play varsity level in their one year away from Holmes as freshmen? I don't know the answer to that question. If yes, then technically I guess you can call them transfers. If not, then IMO they clearly aren't transfers. And if they didn't play varsity and you still want to call them transfers you are opening a can of worms. Because then we should look at all those players who played 1-8 in one school's feeders and then went to a different high school. If we include those players as transfers, then the majority of the top schools can attribute a big part of their success to "transfers". How many athletes at CCH spent grades 1-8 in a school that is not a CCH feeder school? Is it 20% of their roster? The majority of the schools have players on their teams that played in another system before high school. If we want to continue and/or expand this discussion, we probably should start another thread as we are straying away from the topic of this one. If anyone can tell us whether the Johnsons player varsity level their freshman year when they were away from Holmes, please chime in.

I think your beef isn't with me, it's with the KHSAA!

Their rule say's it isn't a transfer from Grade School to HS but it is a Transfer from one High School to another High School! I don't make the rules, I just understand what the rule is!

BTW you are correct we are straying away from the thread!

VOR-I usually agree with your viewpoint, and agree this is probably fodder for another thread. :walk:That being said-I think your hung up on the word "transfer". I don't think it has the negative meaning that perhaps it used to. I do think where you went to elementary school, junior high, etc. has nothing to do with the header High School sports. If you start at one school as a Freshman in High School and then attend another, then you have transferred. It doesn't matter if you started high school in Iowa, and then moved to Kentucky in the middle of your Freshman year, then you have transferred. Parents get transferred in their jobs from state to state and kids transfer from high school to high school. It doesn't wipe out the fact that Newport, Holmes and Boone County all won regional championships. It is also a fact that they were helped by transfer students. Both points are true.:thumb:
