Tough crowd!!

Boone scores 32 points and you are saying they were in the wrong "d" for that game. Give me a Break. Moss teammates had 14 and she had 18 sounds like that 2-3 was easy for them all. Can not understand how a HOF

coach who has been building a program for 25 years with four returning starters(2 seniors) and a transfer like Moss can only beat Ryle with a coach who has had the program for 3 years in OT, 1 point and 2 points. Seriously,

and Oliverio is getting ripped for being a "bad" coach. Maybe Nell should be asking herself how Ryle is so close to her in such a short period of time

Not to mention the transfer from Ryle? Ryle has done this with underclassmen

not with experience! Next two years could be interesting! Anyone want to

guess on who the next one to Boone is? Boone needs a guard!

I literally and figuratively have sat on my hands all year until the end of this rivalry to speak out regarding some of the negative comments that I have read this season.

 

First, I have known both Nell and Patti since their days at EKU and like to keep up with their careers. Second, I do not currently live in Northern KY, Third, I do not have children that have played for either school and Fourth, I am a former female athlete who has coached, trained, managed and directed hundreds of young people through the years. I provide this information in order to demonstrate that I do have the credentials to support my opinions.

 

I can tell you that I would be pleased to have Patti Oliverio coach my children in any sport she coaches. I know that any young lady involved in her program will be well coached, will be expected to work hard, be disciplined and upon graduation be better prepared to play at the next level.

 

Patti is well respected within the coaching ranks at both the high school and college level; at least outside of her own region. She has excellent contacts with major D1 schools and knows how to work for scholarships.

 

She also amassed an outstanding record as a softball coach when she was at Boone County; 6 regional championships and three final fours in 14 years. This record has also been down played on this board as being meaningless as a basketball coach. Winners know how to coach and I bet if she coached volleyball she would have them playing for championships.

 

I went to the Boone County High School website to see just what her record was at Boone County but on the championship page none of the girl’s softball championships are listed. However, girl’s basketball, cheerleading, volleyball, track, soccer, and tennis championships are listed. A glaring oversight, maybe?

 

In Ryle's basketball history the best record the team ever had was 13-13; winning only seventy something games in 9 years. The year before Oliverio took over the reins the team was 9-20. The next year basically the same team was 21-7. Within three years Ryle has won 61 games and played in the regional finals for the first time ever going from ranking 149th in the state to 18th in the state. This year's schedule included games with 6 of the 16 regional champions. Most schools and fans in the country that had this turn around would believe their coach deserved coach of the year.

 

I have been amazed all year at the negativity and lack of support on this board even within the Lady Raider family. Every game, every decision, every defensive set, every offensive play that has been played has been second guessed, criticized, and analyzed. She has received very little credit. It is truly shameful.

 

Unless you have ever coached young women you cannot begin to understand how difficult this job can be. Girls are emotional and a fight with their boyfriend or BFF can totally ruin their game. Girls are also "daddy's little princess" who can be very spoiled. Men you just do not get it; despite the best game plan and the best coaching games can be won or lost based on who is mad at whom.

 

Nell and Patti are both fine women and excellent coaches who deserve all the accolades, support and respect that can be given. Players, parents, fans, and administration be honored and proud to have these women as your coach. Parents be careful of the comments you voice to your daughters or write on this board. If you do not show respect to the coaches neither will your daughters.

Has Nell ever won a region without a transfer?

 

Like i was always told when i was a young girl it doesnt matter if you win by a inch or a mile a win is a win. and boone showed it 3 times that ryle cant beat them. and Nell doesnt need to ask why ryle is close to them because ryle is a great team with alot of players who have alot of heart for the game and wont give up they just lacked experience and next year they should be big favorite but dont count boone out next year either.

talk of the Boone/Ryle rivalry and the two head coaches, Oliverio was

Nell's assistant her first four years and during these two championships.

8 long years till Nell won another one. Then the transfers started

coming and they have not stopped. Championships with Smith from

Dixie, Dailey from Ryle, 2 with Bradley from Conner, and 1 with Moss

from Ryle. Some other top notch players from Highlands and Holy Cross

that did not win the region. Hope that answers your question.

Thanks for your insight. Truly words to remember! Past time to congratulate both coaches for their superb seasons! I have a favorable impression of Coach O, but Coach F has gotten the BIG results! (I really just don't like the way she stomps her foot so much:rolleyes:) Great job ladies!

I walked in with 30 seconds left through the tunnell and caught those last few plays and I was stunned. I thought Crittendon got a good look on her drive but it just rolled out. I was a little miffed that they jacked up the 3 ball with 4 seconds left but it was a good look.

 

I found myself yelling foul, foul, foul, there with all that time left and I had no dog in the fight. I know the coaches were yelling it also so it wasnt their fault. I think the girls for Ryle were just so deflated that their attempts didnt fall that they were not thinking clearly.

 

Congrats to Boone Co and good luck down at Diddle Arena.

So it begs the question - "Would Fookes have won any of the other regionals without the transfers?" Well, I feel pretty sure she wouldn't have done it this year without Moss. In fact, not sure she would have even made it to the regional without her. Transfers like Moss make you look like a better coach than you are.

Maybe to keep Crittendon out of foul trouble?

 

My thought is that was a huge missed layup by Ryle with them down by four points late in the game. Given, one play does not lose the game, but that was BIG.

 

Not sure...given they were in it from the tip, while Jenna was on the bench, and until they needed the ball at the end...tells me they were mostly concerned about Moss.

 

Yes, that missed layup was Huge...bottom line, they had their chance to win in all 3 games...so they were doing something right.

Both Ryle coaches were yelling to foul! First shot was a back-door lay-up that was missed, 2nd shot was thrown up with 12 seconds on the clock off of a rebound and the 3rd shot was a wide open 3 off of another rebound that just missed with 5 seconds on the clock. If that shot goes in people are asking why Boone gave up three shots under 15 seconds and lost the game. Ryle battled to the end. Bet they learn from the experience and will be back next year an even stronger team.

 

See BP...I need to bow out of this discussion becuase I wasn't paying attention...I thought the first shot was a Crittenden 3pt attempt and the long rebound went to Jump who threw up a wild shot from the wing with 12 seconds left on the clock...from that point things got too crazy!

 

On the Crittenden "sideline" call...I thought that the ref blew the whistle because "she" (not the ball) went out of bounds and didn't establish her feet back in bounds when she started dribbling again...see, I gotta get out of this discussion...it's old news now!

I know both coaches too, and feel they are high quality, but the perception is that Nell is outgoing and gregarious, even though many don't like the fact that she has players transfer in to her program. I don't care for that. :ohbrother:

 

For Patti, she has a perceived aloof demeanor, and I would offer that she should smile more, as if she is enjoying things. Her reputation as a fastpitch softball coach is as a good one, but many believe that her time at Boone was good, not great, as it was marred by Title 9 contoversy and despite being favored to win a state title, though many teams were still playing slow pitch in the state at the time, the Rebels came up short.

 

Another perception problem that Patti faces is that many folks believe she works her way into coaching opportunities, and it is a fact that Ryle won a fastpitch championship without her. The only one claimed by a No. Ky school.

 

Both coaches do a nice job, but neither has won a state crown in any sport, :cry: despite the many faithful in the area that defend them vociferously. I think fans of both schools would be better off getting over the rivalry and try to win state.:ylsuper: Winning regions is nice. Winning state is what these large schools should be aiming for. Geez!....or Wow!.....or any other number of exclamations! I had vowed to stay out of this "If's, and's and but's" thread but it has turned rather nasty with a lot of, IMHO, very questionable "facts" and "conclusions" being thrown out.

 

Is this an intense rivalry? Yes, having been on both sides of it I would say it definitely is.

 

But the fact remains, it has been dominated by Boone County. Boone has won 19 of 20 games, the only Ryle win being when Moss was an 8th grader at Ryle and scored 18 points in a 62-51 Ryle win AT Boone County. Of course Boone won the rematch in the district tourney that season by 18 points. It should now be Ryle's turn to step to the plate and reverse the trend. They return all but one player from this season and will definitely be the favorite in Region 9 next year. But it will remain a rivalry and will be as intense as ever.

 

As to Nell Fookes being able to only win with transfers and therefore is overrated as a coach, that's simply ridiculous and the outcry of the folks who are tired of getting their butts kicked by her teams. Sorry, you don't win ~550 games, average 22+ wins per season over 25 years, win 75+% of your games, win 17 district championships, win 9 district championships, be named to the basketball coaches Court of Honor by the Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches and the Kentucky High School Athletic Association, be inducted into the Northern Kentucky Athletic Directors Hall of Fame in, be and honored as the Coach of the Decade for the 1990's by the Greater Cincinnati Coaches Association by just getting transfers. Such an assertion is patently.........well to put it bluntly........stupid! By the way, Fookes has been officially notified by the National High School Athletic Coaches Association (NHSACA) of her selection as a 2010 National Coach of the Year Finalist.

 

And speaking of transfers, the statement was made that Oliverio took over a Ryle team that was 9-10 and took them to 21-7 with "basically the same team". That isn't quite correct. The 2007-2008 team had at least Moss, Crittendon, and Jump as new members who were solid contributors, with Moss being the second leading scorer (and second leading rebounder) and Crittendon the fourth leading scorer after both were brought up from the Gray Middle School squad, and Jump was the fifth leading scorer. Hardly the same team and obviously more talented, but a nice coaching job by Oliverio in using young talent.

 

And on with transfers, as though they only occur at Boone. The question was raised "Maybe Nell should be asking herself how Ryle is so close to her in such a short period of time. Not to mention the transfer from Ryle?" The answer? Those maligned transfers. Has anyone checked to see how many Ryle players don't live in the Ryle district? Yeah, I know there is an "explanation" for these but to accuse Boone of using transfers while ignoring the out-of-district players on the Ryle squad is hypocrisy at its best. All schools will have transfers from time to time. They, in and of themselves don't assure winning. Good coaches win and win over long periods of time, transfers or no. Coach Fookes has done that.

 

Coach comparisons? I could get deeply into that because I've seen both up close. But I won't get into direct comparisons for what should be obvious reasons. I will say that I had the same "external view" opinion of Coach Fookes prior to this season. I only saw the yelling and stomping on the sideline and thought I didn't particularly care for that. Interestingly enough, early last season, when Moss was still at Ryle and we were watching a Northern Exposure Tourney game, I asked her, while watching Coach Fookes "in action", "Could you play for her?" and got a quick response "Sure I could".

 

That has proven prophetic because Moss, after absolutely regressing as a player last season, has improved by leaps and bounds this season under Fookes. And I've gotten to see Fookes beyond that "external view" I mentioned. I've found her to be an intense, demanding coach but one who is genuinely interested in her players as students and as people. I'll take that combination every day of the week and twice on Sunday!

 

I recently had a discussion with a sports writer who covers NKY HS sports. He, an impartial observer in terms of having no tie to any of the teams, told me he had the same experience. He initially watched Fookes and thought "I don't think I'd want my daughter playing for her". Then, over time and observing past the obvious, he said he also saw beyond the "external view" and realized all the other things Fookes does and how much she cares about her players.

 

Again, I didn't want to post on this "issue" but found it so one-sided that I just figured I had to have my say.

 

Now I'm going to head to the State Tournament and enjoy whatever the results are for the Boone County Rebels! :walk: It has already been an outstanding season. :thumb:

Accept the fact that she is one of the best coaches around and move on. Even when you have one great player, it takes four more to get the ball up the court, defend, pass and do all the other tangibles that must be tought by the coach. You are totally correct! One player does not win the game! Each player on the team has a job to do. Who knows if Boone would or would not of won with or without Moss! Sometimes players can pull out wins in situations that are very hard to believe, its called having alot of heart when you play! We are very happy she is at Boone, she is a wonderful person as well as athelete and brings much more to the team than just her athleticism!
