I think that would be expected with the quantity of students that they choose from.

 

Alll the more reason then that it's unfair to lump all the large BC schools together in one district and start eliminating themselves from regional play when "lesser" teams get a much, much easier path in another district.

 

I understand there may be no other way than geography to set up non-classified districts, but as it applies to NKY, geographic lines can be changed a little bit so that each district has a relatively equal number of large/small schools.

Coop, I honestly think that when the KHSAA again realigns the Regions next year or the year after, I look for all the Boone County schools to move to the 8th. Ryle/Cooper are much clsoer to Walton Vernoa, Trimble etc. than is SK and many don't like the fact that there are three teams from Kenton County in three different Regions.

 

The good folks in the 8th won't like it, but something must be done to reduce the number of schools in the Ninth Region.

 

BTW thanks for looking up all the information....Baseball in the 35th or back in my day at CovCath the 34th, has always been very good and that includes the Ludlow Panthers back in those days futurecoach. Ludlow's (Lemker Field) was back in the day, the best/nicest baseball field in all of NKy!

The shame of it all guys is that what Coop describes is just a small part of the many inequities in our current system. No offense to the Boone County guys (many, many are friends), but it is the larger schools and districts around the state that have created and perpetuate the problems. Most of the larger county schools around the state chose a couple years ago to push the "anti-privates" agenda, all the while ignoring the more obvious, more critical inequities of size, enrollment and, in this case, districting. Their reasoning for this crusade was quite suspect, but I personally interpreted much of it to their own selfish agendas. Also, while cost is now a very critical issue in terms of travel expenses as it relates to classification for sports, I cannot help but feel there is a better answer, a better way. The big county systems can't have it both ways, and this is where you and I disagree Coop (which almost never happens by the way). To claim unfairness for your district on a competitive basis, yet the state choosing to ignore the more obvious unfainess of Eminence playing for the same title as St X, really doesn't wash.

TOG you are so very correct. I remember losing a district title at Lemker when a CovCath guy hit a pop-up that just barely cleared the right field fence. Back then it was Holmes, CovCath, Holy Cross, Ludlow and CovLatin in the old 34th District.

Bulldog - With regard to Baseball only, does the Class "A" tournament help mitigate some of the inequity felt by the smaller schools due to the lack of classification? Or do the smaller schools tend to view that as a red-headed stepchild (i.e., second thought)?

Do we disagree? I am asking sincerely. I support classification for all sports, not just football. I very much agree with the inequity dealt to the Eminence's, Heritage's, and Dayton's of the world in non-football sports and think the state/KHSAA does it wrong. I have no idea if Boone COunty administrators are partly to blame for the creation or perpetuation of this system. If they are, that's a shame.

 

But since we are forced to live with it as it currently stands, I also don't like having grossly unbalanced districts right next to each other than could be at least partly rectified by switching schools that are within a mile or two of each other. I can't see the fairness of having a bunch of larger schools lumped together and self-eliminate themselves from regional contention while obviously "lesser performing" schools (and, yes, in most instances "lesser performing" does mean "smaller", but not always - exception #1 Beechwood) teams get a much easier path to advance. That, too, qualifies as unfair to me.

 

Now that being said, I fully admit my viewpoint on this issue is rather myopic. I am looking at this solely and selfishly from a baseball viewpoint and, more specifically, a 9th region baseball viewpoint and, even more specifically, the fan of a 9th region baseball large school. I realize that re-drawing districts might cure some perceived baseball inequities, but then only serve to cause inequities in other sports. Sometimes I tend to lose track that baseball is not the only sport in the world.

You are absolutely correct. At the end of the day we agree completely as to the inequity of our current system. However I've been in the shoes of both a large school coach and those of a small school coach and I assure you, the competitive frustrations of the former are far fewer than those of the latter. I know I and others around our Region will continue to push for classification in athletics to ensure a more competitive balance for all schools.

They have done some work on Lemker field this off season. They put in a whole new backstop that looks real nice. Now if they could just put a grass infield in there and move back that right field fence a little. I think it could be one of the better ones again. The view with the river right behind it definitely makes it a nice spot to watch the game.

I have a problem with the baseball alignments, specifically the 34th District. No offense intended, but there simply is no question that this district - Dixie, St.Henry, Villa, and Lloyd - will be much weaker on a year in-year out basis than the 33rd (Ryle, Boone, Conner, Cooper) and 35th (CCH, HC, Beech, Holmes). I don't see it as being so critically important that all the Boone schools be lumped together in the same district and would suggest that one of the top three teams in that district (most logically, Boone or Conner) be moved to the 34th and have St. H moved back into the 33rd. I assume the logic for the switch was for travel purposes, but let's be serious here - we're not talking about rural country schools that involve substantial driving. They are all reasonably close to one another.

I find this discussion funny. If you can't be one of the top two teams in your district to advance to the region tournament, then your club is out of the mix, and should stay home. Regardless of whether it is baseball or basketball, the size of your school has proven to not matter when winning regional crowns. (The larger schools should have an inherent advantage from a pure numbers perspective of having a larger pool to draw from:D.)

I find it funny also, but I think only the district winner should advance in both basketball and baseball.

The first year that SK Scott Campbell Silver Grove and Brossart were moved I believe was the 1996-97 season.

 

Scott and SK left the 9th at the start of the 2005-2006 season.
