9th Region District fairness

Featured Replies

I have a problem with the baseball alignments, specifically the 34th District. No offense intended, but there simply is no question that this district - Dixie, St.Henry, Villa, and Lloyd - will be much weaker on a year in-year out basis than the 33rd (Ryle, Boone, Conner, Cooper) and 35th (CCH, HC, Beech, Holmes). I don't see it as being so critically important that all the Boone schools be lumped together in the same district and would suggest that one of the top three teams in that district (most logically, Boone or Conner) be moved to the 34th and have St. H moved back into the 33rd. I assume the logic for the switch was for travel purposes, but let's be serious here - we're not talking about rural country schools that involve substantial driving. They are all reasonably close to one another.

You forgot Ludlow...:madman::irked::D

Personally I don't have a problem with it. Ludlow had to be in a district for a long time with bigger schools like CovCath who are always one of the best in the region. Then you also had Holmes which was a school much bigger than Ludlow, and then you had another private school like Holy Cross in that district. So if we want to talk about being fair, that was not a fair deal to Ludlow being in that district. So I think it has worked out that having to be in that tough district for so long, now they get to be in one of the weakest districts. Ludlow had a few really good teams in both baseball and basketball that couldn't get out of the district because of those teams. So I don't feel sorry for these other schools who have to deal with it now. The system is the way it is, and there is no real fair way to fix it.

If you're not going to have classification, it certainly makes sense to take some of this into consideration, as opposed to basing it solely on geography. There is no justifiable reason to have St. H, Lloyd, Ludlow, and Villa in the same baseball district. Not having classification is absolutely unfair to the smaller schools, since unless they are a Beechwood or NCC-type program, it makes it tough for them to have an opportunity to advance. But it's no less unfair than lumping a bunch of larger schools together and eliminating a team that is clearly one of the top eight teams in the region because only two teams can advance from their district.

I really don't think there is any fair way to do districts except geography. That being said, I have often wondered how Ludlow avoided being in the same district with Holmes and CCH. Ludlow is probably closer to CCH than any other school. But I am sure there are other similar examples we can throw out there. But back to the point. With all the sports boys and girls affected, geography is the best way to set the districts.

As to classification, I would argue that baseball is one of the last sports that you need to worry about classification. Two really good pitchers will make a baseball program competitive. There aren't many sports where one or two players can have as much impact.

Guys lets not forget that Ludlow use to be in that district. While Ludlow does get it break now in a easier district, they also had an unfair advantage being in that 35th district for the longest time. So it has even out a little bit for them.

Lets not forget the real reason why Ludlow is not in the 35th anymore. It is because CovCath didn't want Ludlow in the district anymore, they wanted to get of the one team who might not allow them to make the region :D. Since Ludlow was the last only team in a long time to beat them to stop them from going to the region in 2004. :D:ylsuper:

So how many state championship games has the 33rd been in so far or won in Baseball, heck even Basketball.

BTW in a another tread you mentioned that CovCath was a 5A school. I might be an old... but I know enough to know that CovCath is a 4A school that plays up to 5A in Football!

Well, gee, I'm sure you don't have a problem with Ludlow being in the weakest division - by far - in the 9th. :D You think it's fair now simply because you were previously stuck in a division with CCH? What? You expect there not to be any quality teams in your district? Don't forget that two teams advance - you didn't have to win the district while you were in there with CCH, just come in second in order to move on. Not too much to ask for when Ludlow had those "really good" teams, is it? And come on, you're complaining about being stuck in a district with Holy Cross? Aren't Ludlow and Holy Cross about the same size? What difference does it make whether HC is a private school or not? Look, I don't mean to hammer on Ludlow - they are exactly the type of school that needs KY to go to classes in all sports, but since KY refuses to do so, they are also the type of school that you can't fill up an entire district with (i.e., the 34rd, save Dixie) when you have districts like the 33rd and 35th.

I don't think its fair, however sure makes up for somethings. Also yes Holy Cross and Ludlow are about the same size, but it does make a difference that they are a private school. I have had a brother and sister who played sports there, and they weren't there before High School, so I know what went on to get them there especially my brother. I really don't want to get into all that because that is a whole other debate. However in basketball being with CovCath, Holy Cross, and Holmes was not great considering all three are usually top 10 teams and usually two are top 5. In baseball it was not as bad cause CovCath is the only one who is consistently great. I mean I know I played on two teams who made it out of the district to the region when I was playing, and my senior year we won the district while knocking out CovCath in the first round. So it really didn't bother me much when I was playing. :D

I am not trying to say its fair now. I am just reminding people Ludlow has not always been in this district. Ludlow knows what it is like to be in one of the toughest districts. The 34th if I remember right was weak before even Ludlow joined. So I know I think it wouldn't be a bad idea to completely change all the districts and make them all as even as possible. :thumb:

Well I can at least pretend that is the reason.:D

Man, I hate to admit this, but I . . . . agree with you. :scared:

Geographic lines are not things set in stone. They ebb and flow and can be moved - political parties in control re-draw districts all the time to make it more beneficial for themselves. For NKY sports, because we are all pretty close together, these lines can also be altered/extended/reshaped so as to help ensure that the districts are reasonably balanced.

But I also fully acknowledge - as Bulldog pointed out to me - that even if you draw the most perfect boundaries in the history of boundary-making to produce four perfectly equal baseball districts, those same districts might be an absolute farce for basketball or soccer or volleyball or golf. I tend to look at things from a baseball-only perspective and that is my fault. I guess short of classification, there just really isn't a good cure and you are always going to have some unbalanced districts. But I do ultimatley think the unbalance up here in the 34th could be easily fixed by moving one or two schools.

From the looks of that list Coop, the 35th district might be the one who should complain about the competition. Six of the past 11 regional champs have been out of the 35th district.

I don't disagree. CCH and BHS have been major forces in NKY baseball the past decade.

I would submit, however, that in 2-3 more years when Cooper starts to fully come into its own, that the 33rd will be quite a bit stronger than every other district on a consistent basis.

Wow, maybe baseball topics is something we can actually agree on sometimes. Unlike with any topic dealing with football.:thumb:

Excellent work Coop, thanks.

I think that would be expected with the quantity of students that they choose from.
