I only say this because it looked like the Dixie guards beat him physically and mentally. He was frustrated the entire game with the Colonel guards. Do you not remember when he got a foul called on him while trying to guard Hatton about midway through the 3rd and he slammed the ball on the ground and started mouthing off? Colonels were in his head all night. Also I think the success Hatton had off him was getting him frustrated too. He's a very fine player but his emotions got the best of him this game.

 

I noticed he was frustrated, but IMHO it was because the last time he took it to the rim he was clobbered and got a no call. When the foul was called on him in the 3rd I think he was frustrated because it seemed like a ticky-tack foul compared to what he received just before that. I think the ref understood his frustration and that is why he didn't get the "T" for slamming the ball. I personally think any time a kid slams the ball down it should be a "T".

 

I just don't think there is a true point guard in NKY that can beat him physically as he is the strongest I've seen. As far as mentally, we must have been watching different games. He was not even close to frustrated until after that no call. He was his calm-self up until that point. And even after that, he was able to calm himself down pretty quickly and continue playing the game, including making all of his FT's in the 4th. He is very mentally tough, which is part of the reason he is such a great point guard. He keeps his poise and composure in check.

Gabbard did what was needed to help his team win, and yes to say he was "owned" is a bit much. It was not only Gabbard that was scored on last night, Boone played some pretty bad defense ALL night in all 5 positions. We do have to give Hatton credit though, because he was big for Dixie on the offensive end. Even though he is an older than usual 8th grader, he handles himself and the game more maturely as the years go by. He will definitely be one of the dominant guards in the years to come ahead of him. Yes he will be at Dixie. Ive talked to him on several occasions and he wont give a definite yes or no but he says he plans on playing baseball throughout his high school career and he plans on playing football along with basketball.. His best sport IMO is baseball. He also said he likes baseball better. Why would he switch to Holmes when the sports team might succeed in 1 out of the 3 sports he might play. The future looks great for Dixie sports. If he plays all 3 of his sports at Dixie, Dixie will have a legitimate shot to go deep in the playoffs in each sport each of his years at Dixie. At least a more legitimate shot at Dixie than he would have at Holmes playing those sports. Also theres a good chance he will be playing some Varsity time this year in baseball for Dixie so we'll see. :sssh:

 

Just remember Holmes may 4peat and a trip to the Greatest show on Earth (Sweet 16) yearly is HUGE. Not to mention his pops was an outstanding baseball player at Holmes, he has played AAU ball with 2 or 3 of those Holmes 8th graders and the resurgence of the Holmes Football program.

 

Im just saying, he can do whatever he wants in varsity sports for Dixie this season because he is an 8th grader.

 

Just remember Holmes may 4peat and a trip to the Greatest show on Earth (Sweet 16) yearly is HUGE. Not to mention his pops was an outstanding baseball player at Holmes, he has played AAU ball with 2 or 3 of those Holmes 8th graders and the resurgence of the Holmes Football program.

From what I heard there would've been a lot of coaches going after him under the same scenario.

I don't have a dog in that fight, but I would have to disagree. I am not going to discredit a win by Boone's JV team. However the refs in that game were deployable. I am not sure what the outcome would have been had there been different refs, but this was one of the worst officiated games I have ever witnessed.

I basically heard the same thing, with the controversy surrounding one ref all night and the most controversial with 1 minute to go in the game and a 1 point game. If I got the story right Dixie was on defense as Boone attempted a shot - the ball left the Boone players hand and was swatted away with 0 body contact - the ref in question all night whistles a foul, then proceeds to the scorers table and incorrectly reports another players number who was nowhere near the play involved- Dixie's coach questions and explains that it was on a different number-the ref gives him a technical -Boone gets 4 free throws and possession.

I did hear that Coach Chevalier handled this properly by sending the JV coach home for the night. Smart move on his part. Roddy is an emotional guy but I think even he would probably agree he shouldn't be storming into the officials room after a game. Mistakes happen. Hopefully, it was a one-time mistake.

I would agree Clyde, storming into the refs room is not appropriate behavior. The officiating may have been autrocious but no excuse for poor behavior on a coach's part. This will just have to be a lesson learned for Dixie's JV coach. Kuddos to Ken for handling the situation as he did. I think every now and then a coach can lose their head and let their emotions take hold.
