February 28, 201016 yr Author Villanova has out of conference wins over Dayton & Ole Miss, both @ home. They lost to Temple on the road. Syracuse whipped a decent California team, won @ UNC and beat cornell handily early on. They also beat Florida at home & Memphis. West Virginia (tied for #3 in the Big East) has 1 decent out of conference win - Ole Miss, by 10 @ home. They lost by 15 @ Purdue. Pittsburgh (tied w/ WVU for #3 in the Big East) has 0 quality out of conference wins. They lost vs. Texas (by 16) and to Indiana (yikes) by 10. They've also lost to GT, @ Seton Hall, @ South Florida, @ West Virginia & @ Notre Dame. They beat New Hampshire 47 - 32 on 12/4/09. :eek: I think the Big East is the deepest conference in the nation. With 16 teams, that's almost a given every year. It follows that they also have some of the most talented players in the nation. I just don't share the same sentiment that it is far & away the best conference in the land. Not this year, at least. With that said, I expect Syracuse to be #1. I think Syracuse & Villanova are legitimate title contenders. After that, I think it's a toss up between West Virginia & Louisville for the 3rd spot in the conference. Unfortunately, Louisville's bad losses will hurt them.
February 28, 201016 yr Author On the other hand, Ole Miss's schedule was pretty tough. They beat Indiana by 18 early on, before they lost their best player. They won @ Kansas State by 12. They lost to Nova by 12. They beat UTEP. They lost @ WVU. Mississippi is a team that I think could do some damage in the NCAA tourney, if they make it. They've struggled over the past month though, with losses to Arkansas, @ Kentucky, @ Mississippi State, Vandy & Florida. They should win out with games v. LSU and @ Arkansas (who has fallen apart).
March 19, 201016 yr Author Seton Hall got drilled by Texas Tech in the NIT. UCONN barely got by Northeastern in an NIT matchup AT UCONN. Cincinnati won their NIT game & faces Dayton. South Florida lost to NC State, at USF, in the 1st round of the NIT. Georgetown loses to Ohio in the 1st round. Marquette loses to Washington, who went 11-7 in the (pitiful) Pac 10. Old Dominion beats Notre Dame in an exciting game. Villanova squeaked by Robert Morris in OT. Louisville is yet to play Cal. I think UL wins that one, especially since Cal has a starting forward who is suspended. WVU & Pitt both play tomorrow. Rough showing for the Big East thus far. Which teams am I missing?

Rutgers, Providence and DePaul. Seriously, I think you only missed two. St. John's lost to Memphis by 2 in the first round of the NIT. Syracuse has a date with Vermont.
March 19, 201016 yr Author By my calculations, The Big East went 2-3 in the NIT & 1-3 in the NCAA with 4 teams remaining. Of those 4 remaining (UL, Pitt, WVU & Cuse), I think at least 3 will advance to round 2.

John's lost to Memphis in 1st round NIT. strike that...I see someone already mentioned it. While i think the Big East was still the strongest league this year. I believe the RPI can be misleading because a league is highly regarded and teams gain ground by losing to high ranked teams whereas teams in "mid-majors" lose ground when they beat a not as highly ranked opponent.
March 19, 201016 yr When you have eight teams in and the seeds are: 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 6, 6 and 9... one would think you should probably go 6-2 at worst. At this point if all four Big East teams win today (which very well could happen) they will be 5-3.
March 19, 201016 yr One argument I'm not buying with the Big East is that the reason they lost is because they beat each other up so much during the season. Its not football where you sustain injuries on a weekly basis...these are young men in great physical condition. That's weak. If its true, UK should cruise through this tournament because Kansas, Syracuse, West Virginia, etc. played in tough conferences that, instead of preparing them for the big dance, beat them up so much they have nothing left. :idunno:
