Lampe, off the bench, had 2 threes in the 2nd quarter (one at the halftime buzzer) and 2 threes in the 3rd qurter. Tyler was huge spark in getting NewCath back in the game. Schmidt had 5 points total.

The ninth region tournament becomes more intriguing on a weekly basis.

 

It sure seems that way. Still think Holmes is the cream of the crop, but they have struggled far more than I (and others?) expected.

NCC had them right where they wanted them but a no call on a Pittman goal tend and the last 2 fouls on Giesler were weak. Fun game to watch.

What style of defense did NCC play, zone or man?

Have to give them credit for at least trying to man up. A lot of teams woln't do it.

According to the boxscore above, Lampe indeed had four 3's and 12 points. I guess I got him and Schmidt mixed up throughout the game. I assume Lampe is #25...Schmidt is #15, I believe?

Ncc got a boost from Lampe off the bench but did Hightchew play at all? Two underclassmen Geisler and Hightchew have started this year but what other underclassmen have logged any significant minutes? Next year may be a very tough year for the Breds and you can bet Geisler will have to earn every point.

As for the game:

 

- I said in the prediction thread that Pittman would be the difference in this game and the senior didn't disappoint. 23 points, 8 rbs, and 3 block, including a big one on Grant Pangallo with Holmes up 1 with 7.5 seconds to go. Pittman blocks the shot and grabs it out of midair. Goes down and knocks down two free throws to put Holmes up 3...ball game. From nky.com, in regards to Pittman:

 

Pittman did his thing all night. The long-armed 6-foot-8 senior led all scorers with 23 points. He also had eight rebounds and three blocks.

 

"He changes everything," NewCath coach Grant Brannen said. "He's a matchup problem. He's versatile. He can shoot. And he's so long and he can jump. That last block, it's like he came from outer space."

 

- In that first quarter, Holmes showed why teams don't play man to man against the Dogs. They absolutely dominated Newcath in every facet of the game. Breds switched to a 3-2 zone the rest of the game and showed why teams do zone Holmes night in and night out. Holmes started settling for jumpers instead of attacking and it allowed Newcath to dominate the next two quarters.

 

- For NCC, the high/low pick and roll by Pangallo and Geisler was very effective all night. Geisler struggled early against Pittman, but once Rice was switched to the big fella, he did his thing. Rice really struggled to defend him in the paint.

 

- The difference in the game??? NCC took a 43-38 lead with 7:44 left in the game and Holmes didn't allow the Breds to score again the rest of the game. Closed the game out with an 8-0 run. Holmes had a chance to put the game away late several times but couldn't convert. Up 1, JJ missed two free throws and then after getting a defensive stop, Pittman missed the front end of one and one which allowed Pangallo a chance to take a shot with the Breds only down 1, instead of being down 4 or 5 with 30 second left.

 

- All in all, a very well played game by both teams. I said in the predictions thread if NCC got hot from outside, we'd have a ballgame that could go either way. NCC hits seven 3's and Holmes squeaks out a 3 point win.

 

- BTW, this was the first time Holmes had beaten NCC at NCC since 2002. Breds had won 3 out of the last 5 match ups with the Dogs.

Hightchew played and started but wasn't much of a factor. Didn't handle Holmes' size and athleticism very well and spent much of the game on the bench.

 

NCC won the JV contest 46-37.

Best $5 I've spent all year. Great game as both teams go on 18-4 runs to start the game ending in 22-22 score in the middle of the 2nd. I could watch Ricardo guard Pangallo all day. What a matchup. By far my favorite in the 9th region. Geisler getting his 4th changed the game as he had to play soft. With 1.6 left NCC inbounds to Pangallo, he loses control of it and has to chase it down and that gave Pittman time to close out and end the game with a block. I thought the no call on the goal tending by Pittman was HUGE. Also, I thought a dunk after the whistle was a technical, but I guess Chappie thought it was cool to watch.

 

Ricardo Johnson blocked the final shot...not Pittman:

 

NewCath guard Grant Pangallo managed a 3-point attempt as time expired, but Holmes guard Ricardo Johnson blocked the shot to preserve the victory. It was a fitting ending to a game Holmes won with defense.

As I recall Ricardo has had 3 games recently where he has had around 5 pts. Is he just not looking to score or what? IMO Holmes need him to score a little more to put teams away. If they continue to allow teams to stay close they could come up short in a crucial game. Did coach Henley slow the game down or was it strictly the zone defense used by NCC? I still believe that he knows they need to be able to operate within a set offense come tournament time in the region. Teams will zone and that's all there is to it and he wants to make sure they can run the set offense/ The only problem I see is that they don't usually take good shots in this offense.
