Your earliest memory of your favorite team?

Featured Replies

Keith Smart's jumper against Syracuse in the '87 championship. I was huge Rony Seikaly fan at that time.

Two things come to mind when I think about my earliest memory of getting into basketball.

First of all I remember when I was a kid, in the early 90s, pizza hut sold final four miniature basketballs. I do not remember the teams but I remember thinking how cool it was to get one of those balls.

The second thing I remember is the 92 Kentucky/Duke game. I was at a friends house and I remember his dad getting pretty upset over that one.

Unfortunately the '92 game is the first vivid memory I have of the Cats!

Mine as well!

Being hauled in the back seat of a '73 Oldsmobile Station Wagon to Tuscaloosa so my parents can see UK vs. Alabama. Jim Andrews and Kevin Grevey lead the Cats to an upset in the '73 meeting. I didn't get to go but stayed with my cousins at their house.

First great memory was the '75 win over IU. Watching Bobby Knight's wife cry over and again (because NBC kept showing her at each dead ball). All the plaid pants on the coaches in the game.

That '75 team was the first one I really followed and it became a passion from then on out. Highlights:

1. Attending Senior Day in '78 vs. UNLV and watching KY run away from the Rebels for a big win on National TV.

2. Watching UK play their hearts out in the revived SEC Tourney in '79 as Macy and Claytor lead KY through four games in four days only to wear out in the end.

3. Attending Kyle Macy's Senior Night in '80. The Cat put a Super Man's cape on him. It felt appropriate then.

4. Attending the '84 NCAA game in Rupp vs. UL. Cats claw back to beat the Cards on their way to the Final Four.

5. 1986 SEC Tourney. My Dad went to his last tourney that year.

6. The list goes on in the 90's and 00's but you get my drift. :thumb:

Dr. Dunkenstein Darrell Griffith did it for me.

My earliest memory was the 1966 Championship game. Listened to it with my Dad and Uncle. I had listen to other games prior to that one, but that is the only one that sticks.

1984 Final Four.

I had a shirt that said Battle in Seattle.

Griffith came along at the right time. When the NCAA allowed the Dunk shot again in '77. I always thought David Thompson was a greater leaper and player but he did not play College Ball in the Dunk era.

My mom and dad tell me I cried when UK lost to Duke in the 92/93 game. Don't remember it though, being only 5.

My first vivid memory was when UK lost to UNC in the Elite Eight with the likes of Jerry Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace.

To add on to my post from earlier, I remember the Antoine Walker shimmy, and getting a John Wallace (Syracuse) card out of a pack of basketball cards and thinking that I'd hit the lottery. Though he was a UK adversary, I thought he was amazing and couldn't wait to follow his career in the NBA... That didn't work out like I'd thought.

Also, I remember not understanding why Derek Anderson wasn't able to play down the stretch of the '97 season. I was unbelievably upset when he'd come in and shoot technical free throws but couldn't get in the game.

I still question why he didn't play in the championship game.:idunno:

That Elite 8 game is one of my worst all time UK memories.

Listening to Cawood on a cheap am transistor radio describing Cotton Nash and the CATS!!!!!

I still get chills listening to the old sound bytes.

I remember reading stories about David Thompson leaping up to grab quarters stacked on the top of the backboard and crazy things like that. I saw a few films of him in his heyday; I bet he would have been fun to see live.
