Matchup problem with the taller Highland's center?

I have to disagree with you here. The match up could have been offset with what Brown brings with his aggressive play as it wears down his defender and they produce less on the offensive side. There was no more of match up problem than him or Lay being on the court. Brown simply did not get much time on the floor in the second half to get a chance to make anything happen. The coach is leaning on his seniors and none of them have really stepped up to get this team in the right direction. I have heard from opposing coaches about their disbelief in why Brown isn't a starter or gets more time on the floor. IMO the substituting by Boone's coach was really disruptive to them trying to get something going. With Grubbs out Boone should have pounded the inside, there were several times, Lay, Brown and Earls had their guy posted up and the ball did not get inside. This team seems to be scrambling looking for some direction and it's pretty ugly to watch.

Boone could not stop Stewart from scoring inside. Earls had a quiet second half. I like Brown and Earls on the floor together with Montgomery/Cotton, Gabbard, and Popp.

I wasn't able to make it to the last couple of games for Boone, however, I'm struggling trying to understand why Gabbard isn't scoring much at all lately. I could be off with some of my numbers. However, I believe he had 3 pts against St. Henry, 0 against Cooper and 4 against Highlands. I believe he needs to look for his shot more.

There doesn't seem to be much consistency with Boone's scoring this year.... Brown had a couple games were he was getting 16 - 20 points and he scores 2 against Highlands? It looks like it may be Montgomery's turn to score. I believe this is the second straight game with 20 points (Highlands and Cooper) and to throw in 10 rebounds as well is a nice two game stretch for him. And 0 points for Popp in this game?

The up and down season continues for Boone and who is scoring for them!

IMO Brown and Montgomery should be on the floor together more than what has been shown. They may not be seniors, but they seem to know how to take control of their game once they get into a rhythm. Montgomery could emerge to be the leader that replaces the energy that is missing from the departure of Mcfarland. That team plays too quiet, the lack of vocal leadership can cause a team to just float through a game and that's what the Rebels appear to be doing.

I haven't noticed Montgomery being very vocal in the past or this year. From the stands, Cotton appears to be vocal to his teammates at times, but it is hard to tell from there how inspirational/motivational his words are to them. However, it appears that overall the Boone players play hard, and effort isn't the main problem. Coaches can motivate players too. The quietness you see may be a reflection of the coaching style. He appears to be a pretty quiet coach and not a big "rah-rah" guy. Some players need that rah-rah support from teammates and/or their coach to play hard, and some don't because they have enough motivation from within.

With a couple of exceptions, I've always thought that there is too much substitution at Boone, and it is hard for players to get into/stay in a rhythm. They go about 9 deep in every game. I say find your top 5 and play them and use 2 others to spell them.

I still see not enough teamwork, and I notice certain players trying to get their points/stats by taking a bunch of shots, etc. Certain players don't seem to be able to see or be willing to pass to certain teammates when those players are open, etc. If Boone has any chance to do well, they need to work as a team, be motivated, and not worry about who has the best stats, or it will be an early exit in the post season.

Gabbard actually took quite a few shots against Highlands (13) He was 0-5 against Cooper and 2-13 against Highlands. He just wasn't hitting. Gabbard and Cotton probably have taken the most shots on Boone, and those two are the ones who have played the most minutes so far.

Boone has been led in scoring by Gabbard, Earls, Cotton, Popp, Brown, Crabtree, Montgomery and maybe others (Lay?) at various times. I don't think Boone can rely on any one person as a go-to scorer. They need to play well as a team, share the ball, and if someone is hot, get it to them, and the coach needs to leave him in.

Popp missed the Cooper game from illness this week and consequently only played about a quarter of the Highlands game total (few minutes here and there), and his shot wasn't falling when he came in off the bench. Brown also played only about a quarter.

Boone needs some continuity and teamwork. The points will come if they play good team ball and if everybody isn't worried about who is getting the most points.

I agree w/ Wildcat that Boone doesn't seem completely cohesive. Substitution is one thing, but it is other factors too. Your point guard taking 13 shots in a game is one........ he is a good penetrator but isn't there someone to dish to inside? Where is the inside game? Montgomery is a nice player (although seems to prefer the perimeter) but the seniors need to lead the team....who is it going to be?:idunno:

If there needs to be player leaders on the floor, the starting seniors could even lead by committee. However, it has to be seniors that see a lot of PT. I think the underclassmen respect the experience/ability of the seniors and do defer to them/wait for their lead.

Earls was 3-12 in the Highlands game. Started OK but did not play well afterward.

I think part of the problem at Boone is you have some players on that team that probably should have left a couple of years ago. Since they chose not to leave, they still harbor ill feelings towards the coach and his philosophy/style. I think this has created cohesiveness issues on this team. You see players on this team just going through the motions at times.

I haven't noticed that to be a problem this year at Boone. It appears to me that the players are giving their best. The players seem to get along fine. I know Gabbard, Popp, and Earls have played together for years, and Cotton and Gabbard have played together since middle school, and Schulze and Popp have too.

From the Highlands side of things I thought this was a very good road win, esp. considering Kowolonek had an off night scoring, Watson played only half the game due to fouls, and Grubbs and Grote out due to injury. Stewart was very strong inside (I will say again he is very underrated) plus Smith-Keller and Dill really stepped for Birds. Lother solid game.

I agree with your observation totally. Montgomery seems to find his game much better from the peremiter, and that's where he should remain when Boone faces opponents with more bulk inside. I too have noticed a lot of shots going up while overlooking the open man inside, which is fine as long as your nailing down the shot as Montgomery was against HHS. It's the forcing of shots by some that needs to be addressed.

I wouldn't expect Montgomery or Brown to be the team leaders at this point because of the number of Seniors they have on the team. But that's part of being a leader, you don't waite around for someone to take charge, you assume the role, and I wouldn't mind seeing either one of them doing that to help this out. If the seniors don't like it, then maybe they'll become more assertive in the role. I just hope they get it together before it's too late. Too much talent on that team to play the way they have been.

BTW, what in the world are you talking about and where did that come from? Whether to choose to leave or not??? :idunno:

Some good points, but I have to disagree on one part. You can have a floor leader, but the overall leader is the coach of the team, and if a coach doesn't notice a floor leader, then the coach needs to. Boone's team captains appear to be Gabbard and Cotton.

In general in any sport, upperclassmen don't take leadership well from underclassmen.

McFarland took that role last year, but the couple of years before that saw no player doing this.

The point guard is a natural floor leader because the offensive plays start with him and he calls the plays out, or at least relays them to the team from the coach.

I agree with Wildcatfan...not sure what you are trying to say here RE. But I will say all these players did fine last year when they almost beat Homes in the regional championship.
