My comment was more a dig at Van Halen and how they should have changed their name to Van Hagar, because VH with Sammy in no way, shape or form looked anything like DLR's VH.

 

AC/DC still retained their signature sound, for the most part. They just sound like a tribute band when they do the Bon Scott songs.

I love Sammy. Always have, always will. And most (not all) of the Van Hagar stuff I liked. However, the best VH stuff was the early stuff (1st album was groundbreaking & Fair Warning was just tremendous). But the change started before Sammy joined when Diver Down and 1984 came out. Commercially successful, but not the same VH. The change wasn't just Sammy, but Eddie was already starting to venture into other styles before DLR left. They sold more records with Sammy, but even though I like him, it was not the same.

 

I also agree that the best AC/DC was the Bon Scott stuff. Back in Black was great, but the early stuff was the best.

 

Guns and Roses is no longer GnR. While they have Axl, without all the ingredients (Slash, Izzy, etc), the final result is never the same.

I don't know why, and this might be blasphemy, but I've always preferred Brian Johnson's vocals over Bon Scott's.

 

AC/DC has done really well and I like Brian better than Bon and I have almost every thing they have done.

I actually like a few songs with Brian Johnson, but he's not worthy to do a mic check for Bon Scott. Just my opinion.

Pink Floyd, as mentioned above, is an example of a band that did well after Syd left the band. However, Waters was pretty much the genius of that band after Syd and he was an original member. I do think Gilmour's vocals and lead guitar were better than Barrett's.

People always talk about AC/DC being better with Scott rather than Johnson, but haven't they made most of their most memorable/recognizable music with Johnson out front? I'm not a huge fan so I can't say for sure, but it always seemed odd when people discussed Scott as the best.

I've always thought of the Bon Scott AC/DC to be miles better than the Johnson era, and keep in mind that I'm not totally anti-Johnson AC/DC.

Though they're not at the popularity level of the other bands mentioned Killswitch Engage got more famous when Howard Jones became the lead singer and alot of people consider them a better band now.
