St. Henry 66 Boone County 62 (OT)

Featured Replies

Mikey fouled out in overtime I believe, played very well, but it was like Boone guards did not want to or were told not take outside shots last night. I agree he has to get more looks.

Two very questionable calls by the two man reffing crew. The first was with 1.3 seconds left and Boone throws the home run ball and there was a push at mid court, no call and the ball went out of bounds at the other end untouched so St. Henry had a shot at the end to win in regulation inbounding under their own basket. The second was in OT with St. Henry at mid court and their player picks up his dribble and gets pusehd to the ground. When he lands, he's called for over and back. Kind of reminded me of Eddie Murphy getting arrested for disturbing the piece when thrown through a window.

Popp fouled out in the OT period, not the middle of the 4th. Also, I think everyone here is not taking into consideration that Earls has missed two games in a row and Boone lost them both. Earls is one of the top players in the 9th (according to the BGP polls), and would be missed by any team. Nice win by St. Henry, but Boone will be just fine with their full complement of players IMO.

Does Earls in the lineup take time from T. Brown? It looks like Brown is handling the load just fine. From what I see, Boone needs more consistent scoring from their perimeter players. Maybe let them run some?

Top Two reasons for St. Henry victory over Boone...

#1 - Free Throws - Free Throws, Free Throws, Free Throws. I would love to see what the stats were in the free throw category in the 4th quarter and in OT. St. Henry didn't miss any (seemed like) and Boone didn't make any.

#2 - Coaching - Coach Faust. I agree with CCR in a post at the top of the thread. He gets more out of his players than any other coach in the 9th region. If he's not the best coach in N. Ky, he is in the top 2 or 3. And, well, the BCHS coach isn't Faust. How much input does Coach Downs have at Boone? I hear nothing but good things about him as a coach and in AAU, however, there doesn't seem to be a great deal of communication between the head coach and Coach Downs during games. I would like to see him a bit more involved in some of the decision making / substituions during games. How, when taking the ball out at the end of regulation with 1.8 seconds left and you have to go the length of the court do you NOT put someone on the baseline (under your offensive basket) to ensure that the inbounds pass doesn't go out of bounds without being touched which allowed St. Henry to then inbound the ball under their own basket. Again, hats off to Coach Faust on play they called to get a wide open look at the buzzer that could have avoided OT all togheter.

Referring- Just to make a comment about the refs, some of the calls and non calls (BOTH WAYS) were just terrible. I especially liked the push of the St. Henry player at mid court by Boone that was called as over and back. I thought that was a classic. I don't understand why it is not mandated that high school games do not require 3 referees!! I believe it is up to the home team to determine whether or not a third referree is at the game? Does someone know the rule on that one? If that is the case, then, if I had a physical team and was playing at home, I would just seek to have just two refs call the game. Just my opinion, but I could see where this could be taken advantage of. I'm not saying that was the case in this game at all, just an observation in general. There were a ton of missed calls, a ton a questionable calls and a ton of bad calls. Not just my opinion, but the reaction from both sets of fans when calls were made would support that claim. I know they aren't perfect, but come on....

As for fixing the Rebels..... I don't know how much actually needs to be fixed, however, with the very limited action for Earls and Lay, once they get back on the court, they should be fine. I would like to see Gabbard get more shots (as noted in an earlier post) and be more assertive and can the Rebels please use their athletes and run up and down the court and allow them to make plays? They should be scoring in the 70's, not having to make a late run to get into the 50's.

Just my thoughts....

Does Earls in the lineup take time from T. Brown? It looks like Brown is handling the load just fine. From what I see, Boone needs more consistent scoring from their perimeter players. Maybe let them run some?

Brown has been playing well offensively the last few games. I agree that letting Boone run more instead of setting up in a half court offense as often could take better advantage of their quick guards.

The Cru throw their hat in the ring as a 9th Region "A" contender next week.

No surprise. Dave Faust coached teams are always contenders in the "A" and in the post-season.

This one won't sit well with the Boone faithful.

I agree about the refs also, and yes coach Faust had a great game plan as usual, but lets give the kids the credit here on this win also. Bessler great job driving to the basket and taking it at the Rebels big men. Anderson clutch hitting free throws and rebounding. Barnett first half play kept the CRU in the game. Jake Hils shut down defense and being the floor genreal for the CRU. Brian Carroll limited minutes coming off the bench and delivering the knock out blows at the end of the game. If Carroll starts to get more minutes the Crusaders become a very dangerous team. And then you have Alex Thorburn in my opinion the unsung hero for St.Henry he does his job he battles and plays down low every game along with Danny Siefried (sp) every game giving quality minutes. So hats off to these young men on a big win and to the rest of the young men on this team. You guys wanted it more last night and you deserved to win. Good luck in the Class A.

I still can not understand why Carrol does not get more minutes than he does. Every game I have been to when he gets off the bench he does a great job. Whether it be scoring or defense he just about always gets the job done but doesn't seem to get as much PT as he deserves. Take last night for example. Comes in late in the game with his team down a few and hitstwo HUGE threes. He misses either of them I think we can all agree they don't win that game. Also had a big overtime to give his team the boost they needed to win.

With him getting more playing time I think that makes them a much better team, I believe him and Bessler are by far the best two big men thay have and should get a majority of the playing time.

Agreed, I think its a discipline thing for past mistakes with him with emotions. He can shoot lights out and the other players respond to him as well. I think he should get more playing time and maybe he will, but that come downs to Coach Faust and Brian Carroll. I think he deserves the chance to help this team more than he is getting also. Go luck to the CRU.

The Cru learned alot about themselves last night. Down nine late in the game with Boone shooting double bonus and only 4 team fouls against Boone. Solid D, patience on offense, and clutch freethrows by more than one player and they deservingly have a chance to tie with seconds left. Four or five players touch the ball and Danny Seifried, a tough role player, delivers the assist to Carroll, who nails it. Even the inbound play to win it in regulation, well planned and executed--just didn't fall. Poise throughout the overtime with more made freethrows. Even after Ronald Cotton's thunderdunk. None of that may have been the case two weeks ago. Reasons:

1) Brian Carroll, one of the best per-minute scorers in the region, earning more minutes, a tough matchup, in the game and solid down the stretch.

2) Zach Barnett playing great and enjoying himself more each game.

3) Hils and Anderson staying on the floor. Hils is wearing out pointguards with his brain and his feet. Anderson, baseline to baseline, one of the most productive 6'1" players in NKY.

4) Bessler's motor at full throttle giving opponents' bigs fits.

5) Gulla, Thorburn, Seified, Tobertge, Dedden, Patula, Jordan all contributing and getting better each game.

Last night BCHS had a multitude of "year-round" players. The Cru has one or two who play some spring and summer tournaments. They trust their coaches and are finding out what it's going to take to finish strong. A very exciting game at St Henry last night with great school spirit and fan support. Tremendous night.

The game ultimately boiled down to Boone missing several late free throws at the end where the rowdy St. Henry section was. Even after that, Boone had chances to preserve the win in regulation. I also thought that they should have fouled St. Henry as they were inbounding the ball with 17 seconds left and forced them to hit two free throws and then foul Boone to send them to the FT line.

The talent is there on Boone. The game outcome had nothing to do with them having less talent or not "trusting their coaches." That's great that St. Henry players played well last night and that their coach is doing a good job with them. I think Faust helps many of his teams/players overachieve their ability year in and out.

I thought that St. Henry as a whole outhustled Boone in this game on the boards. Brown and Popp were the bright spots for Boone in this one. Brown was strong inside, even with St. Henry defenders often hanging all over him. He has been playing well the last 3-4 games. Although Popp played only about half the game due to foul trouble, he was able to drive and score pretty well and helped Boone build a 5-7 point lead with about 10 points and a couple assists/steals in the 3rd quarter.

I thought that Carroll hit two huge shots in the end. The last rainbow he hit to tie the game was from deep. Anderson hustled and played well, especially in the second half, and had some nice drives. Bessler hustled and drove well too. Bessler and Anderson both outhustled/outquicked Boone's bigs inside and came up with several key rebounds and stickbacks. Bessler had a very nice up and under move against Cotton that got him off his feet so he could score a layup. I do think that a healthy Earls would have helped Boone in this one. Anderson hit his free throws well in OT for St. Henry. Barnett played pretty good, especially in the first half and hit an outside shot or two. Hils took decent care of the ball, but did not hurt Boone in particular. I think he had about 2 buckets and a free throw and really did not penetrate. The St. Henry forwards are the ones that penetrated and did the damage offensively. St. Henry's forwards (Anderson, Carroll, and Bessler) were the best players for St. Henry, IMO.

The officiating was horrible for both sides. Fouls were called that should not have been called, and vice versa. There were also some very obvious, uncalled walks. I've seen the one ref at least 3 times now, and he has been bad in every game.

Overall, a messy but exciting game.

Now, now. Surely you aren't questioning the genius of the head coach of the 7-7 Crusaders?

2) Zach Barnett playing great and enjoying himself more each game.

I wasn't able to attend last night but I spoke with some people after the game who were very impressed with this St. Henry's Cru. Great win guys! Glad to see the boys getting some solid wins for the hard work they put in.

With that said, I've seen this St. Henry develop over the past few years. And I can tell you one thing, the senior leadership they have is going to make sure they give 110% in every game and every practice. I've seen them scrimmage and practice a few times this year and from JV to Varsity these guys really get after it, and really get after each other. Thats why they are prepared to play in big games like CovCath, Boone, and hang around with Holmes. Hardest working St. Henry team I've seen in some time.

1) Brian Carroll-Had a tough start to the season with some issues earlier. But this kid has done nothing but work his butt off and is impressing everyone who sees him play He's done a great job the past few weeks and makes St. Henry a threat against almost anyone. In my opinion he's the most underrated palyer in the area, and out to prove everyone wrong. Keep up the great work young man!

2) Zach Barnett-Seems to be much more comfortable in the offense. He's found his role. Uses his speed well on defense getting steals and deflections. Hasn't been forcing 3's but making them when he's called upon.

3) Hils and Anderson staying on the floor. Hils and Anderson are great leaders for this squad. Hils is basically a 2nd coach out there. Anderson brings great defense but is a outside and inside threat.

4) Bessler's-There can't be a more athletic and faster kid in the region right? He makes me tired just watching him. Then to add to it, he's got a pretty good mid range game.

5) Gulla, Thorburn, Seified, Tobertge, Dedden, Patula, Jordan all contributing and getting better each game. agreed and all are great role players for this squad.

The behavior of some of the parents of Boone players is extremely disappointing.

Now, now. Surely you aren't questioning the genius of the head coach of the 7-7 Crusaders?

Exactly what I was thinking as well.

I would have said of the overachieving 7-7 Crusaders though.....
