Newport 77 Boone Boone 67

Nine threes will win a lot of games for you. Did Boone not even extend the zone a little when the 3's started flowing for Newport? Or was this a case of Newport just getting hot and hitting contested 3's or hitting them from well behind the arc?

As I seem to recall, the same thing happened in Boone's loss to NCC. Pangallo hit about 8 threes and they continued to sit in a zone.

Where is the Tucker kid been? Didn't see his name in the box score.

Didn't get to play first half last night; got into game in third quarter, was taken out walked off the floor and quit to my understanding. Some kid's just don't get it.

Any box scores or stats? I didn't see anything in the paper about the game.

Thanks Einstein for the quarter updates on the previous thread. Looks like Newport exploded in the 2nd quarter.

Boone stayed in a zone defense after Newport kept hitting 3's (9 or 10 of them)? That's a lot, how many did they shoot? Why didn't Boone play man defense? Was it because no Lay and no Earls?

They tried to press in the end, and a couple of the threes were hit in the 4th quarter in transition after the press was broken.

Yes, IMO, the 3 pointers were the main difference in both games.

Man to man certainly makes it more difficult to make threes.

Well, I think all a coach says after that is bye bye and good luck - we'll win without you....and they did.

Don't surprise me at all. He done the same thing to the football team.

IMO, Boone should start utilizing a 3-2 zone against some of the better 3 point shooting teams. They could put some size in the middle up top, and get their quick guards on the wings. This is a very effective defense that I don't see utilized enough.

Note to self... "Voice of Reason" seems to think that Boone Co's coach did not know to extend his zone defense when Newport started hitting 3's.

Looked like Boone was in a 1-3-1 for a while too, may have been when it was easier to hit the 3 from the side. I wonder what their % was from the floor, the usual shots that would fall for Gabbard and Popp weren't going in last night. Brown had to sit a good bit of the 3rd and 4th quarters due to foul trouble, seemed to have an impact without Earls or Lay to share the post time last night.

How about go man?
