January 12, 201016 yr http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4818624 Personally, I think Darrelle Revis should have won (he finished second). His ability to shut down elite receivers was second-to-none this season. And, that's even more impressive when you consider how much the Jets rely on the blitz. Here's what the Jets' opponents #1 WR's did in 2009... Andre Johnson - 7 targest, 4 catches, 35 yards Randy Moss - 19 targets, 9 catches, 58 yards, TD Nate Washington - 9 targest, 2 catches, 25 yards, TD Marques Colston - 6 targets, 2 catches, 33 yards Ted Ginn, Jr. - 3 targets, 2 catches, 57 yards, TD Terrell Owens - 17 targets, 6 catches, 44 yards Louis Murphy - 10 targest, 4 catches, 58 yards Mike Sims-Walker - 7 targest, 3 catches, 49 yards, TD Steve Smith - 7 targest, 2 catches, 2 yards Antonio Bryant - 6 targest, 2 catches, 22 yards Roddy White - 10 targets, 4 catches, 33 yards Reggie Wayne - 7 targes, 3 catches, 33 yards Chad Ochocinco - 4 targets, 0 catches An average game vs. Revis in '09 was 2.7 receptions, 28.1 yards and a TD every 4 games. #1 receivers caught 43 of 112 targets (38.4%). Obviously, Revis wasn't defending these guys on an island on every pass attempt, but its still very impressive. That said, Woodson had a great season and is deserving. I don't have a problem with him winning, I just think Revis should have.
January 12, 201016 yr Elvis Dumervil received 3 well deserved votes. Congrats to Elvis!!! As far as Woodson, I have no problem with him winning this award. What a season he had.
January 12, 201016 yr Author So it appears as though Revis "struggled" with Ted Ginn, Jr., huh? It is interesting. I didn't break it down, but at a glance, it looks like the numbers against elite WR's would be better than the rest. Moss is the only elite guy to find the end zone against him. The other three were Ginn, Nate Washington and Sims-Walker.
January 12, 201016 yr Bengals' corners are good, but how nice is it to have an absolute shutdown corner like a Revis/Woodson/Champ Bailey/Deion Sanders? You can throw so many more looks at an offensive when you have a safety/LB freed up to do other things. Both Hall and Jospeh are solid, but I don't see either ever becoming a shutdown corner.
January 12, 201016 yr Some commentator said last week that Woodson has had as good of a year as any corner ever.
January 12, 201016 yr Without looking it out, I'd say Woodson had more big plays that Revis and probably why he won.
January 12, 201016 yr Woodson had 9 picks with 3 TD's Revis 6 picks with 1 TD I know stats don't tell the whole story for corners, but this is probably what decided it. FWIW, Darren Sharper had 9 INT's, 3 TD's and 4 FF's.

FWIW, Darren Sharper had 9 INT's, 3 TD's and 4 FF's. Very, very true. When QB's won't even throw your direction because you have the WR so well covered, it definitely limits your stat opportunities.

January 12, 201016 yr Author I think Sharper would have got it had the Saints, particularly their defense, finished stronger. Just a guess though...
January 12, 201016 yr Here is how the voting went.... Charles Woodson - 28 Darrelle Revis - 14 Elvis Dumervil - 3 Darren Sharper - 3 Jared Allen - 2
