I believe that the games are not fixed but influenced.Some may very well be fixed but imo most are just influenced by point spread and "babying" big name players.

Influenced is basically a smaller and lighter word for fixed.

Every sport with a ref is influenced by the referee, we'll agree there. I notice it when I play- if I am significantly bigger than the guy guarding me, I generally get away with a lot less than if my opponent is significantly bigger than me. I guess I just don't see the integrity of the entire league being compromised.

There is a big difference in having "influence" and what the NBA does.

 

The NBA and it's refs are different because it's a lot slower pace than the NFL and a lot less players on the field/court. Now it seems that refs in the NFL has some bias, BUT there is a ton of flags thrown on a regular basis in NFL games, not really against one player in particular. Refs have a job and it's to protect the QB.

Say Kobe has 4 fouls one game but really was let by with 3 more during the game. Well that is 7 fouls and if Kobe hits the game winning shot then those refs directly influenced the outcome of the game and therefore they are fixing the game by dictating whether or not certain players stay in the game. Players getting calls in the NBA have been in existence for a long time and it won't stop anytime soon because the NBA doesn't want it too. Last night was a prime example, what was the big story this morning (outside of Chris Henry)? It was Kobe hitting the game winning shot, had the ref called the travel or the charge on Kobe then the Lakers would have likely lost and it wouldn't be news, BUT it wasn't called, an "and-1" was called and Kobe ended up hitting a game-winning shot and it made headlines and was on ESPN all day. You mean to tell me the NBA doesn't want that? Of course they do and so that is why they let the refs do what they do, make calls based on the names on the jerseys and not based on the rules in the book.

^ It was a bad call but I have seen much worse. Not enough to make me think the game was fixed. Why would Vegas or anyone betting this care about that. The Lakers were already not going to cover.

I don't know how much NBA you watch, but that isn't called a travel very often no matter who the player is.

 

I'm wondering your list of players who get preferential treatment by officials. There are a lot of superstars in the league.

I'm still a believer that the NBA is (or it at least used to be) a little dirty. And by a little, I mean a little more than other pro sports.

 

And does the NFL have "make up calls" ?

 

I will admit that the NFL officiating this year has been nothing short of terrible IMO. And Goodell is doing his best to screw up the best league in professional sports.
