Beechwood is going to be a good team this season, Daniels and Pohlgeers are very solid players.

Beechwood is definately going to be a solid team again this season, if tonight says anything.

 

I think however a big reason Rico had 6 points tonight has alot to do with Henley having him run the point. He is more of a slasher, that wants to come off of screens to set his shots up. He can go off the dribble as well but I think the role that he played tonight, he was looking to distribute more than get his own shot. If Henley keeps him as his primary ball handler he is going to have to pressure more defensively open it up and let this team run. Rico did not at all look comfortable trying to run a motion offense tonight, he was not looking to score, this team wins games when that kid scores. Either Holmes needs to find another point guard or they need to try to run alot more. It was obvious that Riley's court awareness and leadership as a point guard was missed. Rico was getting frustrated with other players, leading to small arguements on the court, the most obvious was with his brother in the second quarter. Lot of chemistry things to work on, I don't think this team has an identity yet, they miss the seniors that left last year and that is obvious.

 

I agree. I wasn't at this game, but I did see the Clark Co game and I noticed the same thing. Rico just doesn't look comfortable at point yet. I think he will adjust with some more time so no need to worry. At the Clark County game, there were a couple of point guards on the bench that seemed to do OK when they were in the game. How did they look tonight?

Did the BW football players play? Vocke?

 

Vocke was dressed but did not enter the game. Cory Cruse came off the bench and played very well. That was all the football players that were dressed tonight.

Mayfield actually got some time at the point last year, and he is just young and sometimes he plays to fast for himself, he was called for a couple of travels tonight that were just mental errors. He is a hawk defensively however.

 

McClendon, only got about 3 minutes of PT tonight and he is an outside shooting specialist.

 

The other guys (Herndon and Hayes) played some, but when they were in the game Rico was still on the ball.

The most important position on the court by far, especially at the high-school level.

I caught this one last night and I was very suprised by the Tigers. Beechwood got big minutes out of Freshman Max Nussbaum and Sophomore Corey Cruse and they were fresh off of the football field! Pohlgeers and Hall both played pretty nice games for the Tigers. Holmes played a pretty sloppy game for the most part but ramped up the intensity when they needed. They forced some turnovers in the second half that let them take the lead. I am sure they will clean it up by season's end. But don't sleep on this Beechwood team.

:ylsuper:I agree totally. Johnny Pohlgeers I believe had 13 points and did do a great job on Ricardo Johnson. Pohlgreers made a jaw dropping move on JJ and finished strong on one play. I was impressed with the defense from Beechwood freshman Max Nuesbaum. He is a very tough young man. Not sure on the spelling of his last name Fangman did a super job keeping Avery scoreless. Avery scored his only 2 points on a screen/switch Fangman moved to guard JJ. Avery also did a super job holding Fangman to only 6 points. Great game turned in by Beechwood. Holmes just another win for a great team.

 

I thought Pohlgeers played excellent D on R. Johnson;only holding him to 6. Beechwood played man for most of the game. THE TIGERS ARE FOR REAL!

I said in the summer that Pohlgeers would be a top player in the 9th this year and caught some flak for it. I stand by my prediction.

There will be at least a few players who weren't picked pre-season top 10 that will be there at the end of the season, and certain players picked top 10 won't be there.

The coaches did not pick Beechwood to even be in the preseason top 10 in NKY this year. Beechwood lost most of their starters and offensive production from last year. Heck, many BGPer's were predicting Dayton or Villa to win D-III this year. Yet, Beechwood gave the defending state champs (who also happen to be nationally-ranked) fits. Either everyone missed the boat on this team, or Beechwood's coaching staff must be something else!

I'm not convinced they're top 10 but they will be better than expected. Good sophomores. Good "scorer." Very good coaching.

Holmes is going to struggle for a bit until they learn how to play without Riley, Housley, and Dom Johnson. Those three, although they weren't the headliners, were very good experienced players. Holmes has alot of young players without alot of varsity experience stepping into roles that they have to learn and the big three of JJ, Rico, and Pittman have to learn they are the leaders and their is nobody to fall back on. They must take the bull by the horns.

I was very impressed with Nussbaum the freshman from Beechwood. He handled the ball very well with both hands. He is very quick and athletic and carries himself like he is much older. He didn't shoot the ball much but he seemed to be the guy they were most comfortable with running the show. I'm still baffled why Holmes never presses much. I believe Beechwood would have really struggled against full court pressure. I'm not going to question Henley's coaching though as his record speaks for itself.
