November 30, 200916 yr True. I just think it's a similar hire. U of L may need a defensive guy rather than an Offensive minded coach. Strong will bring in a good defense and being a Meyer disciple will have an effective offense as well. I think he's the total package for U of L. I'm torn on it, I like the offensive guy because it will excite the fanbase (bandwagon) fans. I like Strong because I think he's a defensive guru, a great recruiter, and a winner. I'm really pulling for Strong to get the job. But I'd be ok with Sumlin. Basically, out of the names floating around, I'm against Fulmer.
November 30, 200916 yr ^What makes UL more attractive than either? In theory, an easier path to a BCS bowl.
November 30, 200916 yr Author In theory, an easier path to a BCS bowl. The Big East crowd is always barking about how it is better than the ACC :idunno:
November 30, 200916 yr ^What makes UL more attractive than either? KU-Big 12 (second toughest conference)/basketball school. UVA- as mentioned, admissions, not much tradition, recruiting. It pays about the same as UofL. I wouldn't say UofL is more attractive than UVA, they are pretty equal. I just said it's not more attractive than UofL.
November 30, 200916 yr The Big East crowd is always barking about how it is better than the ACC :idunno: It's about the same. The ACC path is no harder, I mean look at who's in their championship game. Like I've said before, the ACC has won two BCS bowl games EVER.
November 30, 200916 yr The Big East crowd is always barking about how it is better than the ACC :idunno: Some like to have their cake and eat it too. It's much harder to win the ACC than it is the Big East. No ACC team is UC good this year IMO, but they have a few teams that are probably better than WVU and Pitt.

In climbing the coaching ladder, wouldn't one want to be in the second best conference?
November 30, 200916 yr It's about the same. The ACC path is no harder, I mean look at who's in their championship game. Like I've said before, the ACC has won two BCS bowl games EVER. Look who's not in their championship game though. Depthwise the ACC is much tougher IMO. Pitt, WVU, VT, Miami are probably about all comparable, but I think after that the ACC has more depth. Big East has the best team, but IMO the ACC has more quality teams, and more teams overall which is going to make any BCS conference a little tougher.
November 30, 200916 yr The Big East crowd is always barking about how it is better than the ACC :idunno: Ergo, my use of the qualifier "in theory."
November 30, 200916 yr In climbing the coaching ladder, wouldn't one want to be in the second best conference? I'd rather use UofL as a stepping stone, but some might want that. It's gonna be a lot harder to win at KU than UofL, that's all I'm saying. Striclty because you have to compete with some of the big boys of college football.
November 30, 200916 yr ^^I agree with that. U of L could be a good job again IMO. Just need the right man for the job.
November 30, 200916 yr Author UL does seem like a pretty good stepping stone place. Not sure it will ever be a destination for a great coach.
November 30, 200916 yr UL does seem like a pretty good stepping stone place. Not sure it will ever be a destination for a great coach. Some would never admit it, but it's the truth. Schools like UofL (and your boys too) will never be football schools IMO. That doesn't mean a great coach can't coach there. Petrino is a great coach, it just means you probably ain't keeping that coach. Similar to a Xavier in basketball.
