I will argue that ND has the PASSING offense to contend next year but the real problem on offense is runnng the ball. Hughes and Allen aren't explosive or dangerous, if they want a homerun threat in the backfield they should put Riddick in.

 

Besides the falty running game they have a dismal defense. The only way they can compete next year isif theyimprove on D. This is why Gary Patterson is an ideal choice for ND.

 

Patterson is a great fit IMO. I don't think ND can afford to go with him though. I think many would see that as a huge "miss" on the coaching hires. I love Patterson and think he woud do a great job, but if it's not Meyer, Stoops, BKelly, or an NFL guy I think people are going to complain. Maybe they could get by with Harbaugh.

 

I think Kelly is the man for the job. People think of him as an offensive guy, but I believe that some of his early back ground may have been defense. Clearly he puts an emphasis on it. UC lost nearly their entire defense last year, and though this years unit isn't Elite it is far from pathetic IMO, considering all factors.

 

I think 2 guys would make ND a contender next year: Meyer or Kelly. I think Patterson is the next best fit if they are trying to contend NOW. I think Stoops and Harbaugh may take a little longer, but would have sucess. If they could get a Gruden, I think they would have a good shot of having a great season but I think he would have more of an effect on the future. ND would be straight up nasty in the near future with any of those guys IMO. I do think that Kelly is the best guy if they want success instantly though. I think he adapts better to his personel, where Urban really goes in and changes things to fit his system and coaching style from day one. Both would make ND a winner though IMO in a short amount of time provided they can at least get Tate to come back (which I think is relatively possible).

 

People can say what they want about Charlie Weis, but ND is a much better job IMO than it was when he got it. There is talent there, it just hasn't been used properly IMO.

Do you go to many Bucks games? I'm going no matter what to the game vs. Miami next year. It should be one of the games of the year. If the Canes get beat by the Buckeyes again, I have a buddy who will never let me live it down.

I agree completely. Patterson was one of the names brough up when Miami was looking for a new coach, and I would have loved to have gotten him though I am really happy to have Randy Shannon.

Decent? Find me one receiver in college football better than either of them. If Floyd hadn't gotten hurt, he'd be a finalist for the Biletnikoff along with Golden Tate.

If they had an SEC defense they sure would.

Obviously you haven't watched a ND game this year if you consider Clausen, Tate, and Floyd "decent".

 

As for ND being a championship team I think it isn't completely out of the question. There will not be any team that is like Florida or Texas this year. A lot more open. The best team in the country will be Bama' and they have to play in the SEC. If, and it's a big if, ND can beat USC then I don't see why they wouldn't be a BCS Championship team with their schedule.

I can see an argument for Green and Shipley, but I still have to take the two at ND over them, especially Tate. I think Tate and Shipley are kind of comparable, Shipley is better in the open field but Tate gives you that, and he's probably the best possession WR in the country. He seems to have hand strength like the great college WR of this ere, Fitz, Calvin Johnson, Crabtree, etc.

 

Green and Floyd are comparable. I think Green probably has the higher ceiling, but Floyd is pretty good.

 

JMO, but I'd take all four by alot over Damien Williams. I like Williams, I just think the other four give you alot more.

 

A different coach probably has a better defense this season, and probably wins at least 9 games. Clausen, Tate, Floyd, Rudolph that's good enough to win 9 games IMO this season or it should be. Defense is a product of coaching IMO, more than offense. A good defensive coach probaby wouldn't have turned this bunch into the steel curtain, but they wouldn't have been pathetic either IMO.

Look, I know Tate and Floyd are good, but they can't play defense too. Despite Tate in the wildcat, which he has picked up some good yards, they can be in the back field either. And they can't develop the others players around them to get better.

 

What else do you want them to do? Both had 100 yards against the two teams you mention.

 

And I have watched them this year, I have been to 5 games. Every game they have played in outside of their two blowout wins was within 7 points. It wasn't the guys on offense that lost those games either. I mean I few things go differently they could be at 1 or 2 losses. So IMO NO they are not far from being a championship team.
