Didn't Barry Switzer get canned for making these types of decisions?

 

Like Mooch said on NFL Network, to paraphrase...it's easier to make that call when you've got the jewelry Belichick does.

 

I like it. I thought it was a good decision. I'm a little surprised they actually did it since NFL coaches typically play it safe. But, Belichick is more likely than pretty much anyone else to make a call like that.

Weren't the Bengals in almost the same situation yesterday?

That stat is flawed in the sense that it doesn't take into account that it was a 100% chance of Manning and the Colts scoring from the NE 30 yd line.

 

Ok then they were probably 95% to go the extra 38 yeard the punt would have netted on average. So they were going to score no matter what unless NE got the 1st and ran the clock out. I think you just helped the case of going for it. They also got the 1st but were given a bad spot IMO.

Um not even close IMO. The Bengals didn't give up any TD's to the Steelers all game. Indy had already scored 2 TD's in the 4th quarter. Both of those drives took about 2 minutes.

I think the thing that Belicheat did that bugged me the most was running off the field without shaking the opponents coaches hand. That's common courtesy in the NFL. He did give a half hearted wave on his way off the field.

 

Even when he makes a dumb move and gets beat he still acts like he's too good for anyone else. I'd love nothing more than to see players start quitting on that jerk and have Bill watching the playoffs on TV.

They didn't punt the ball. They kicked a field goal with 2 minutes to go to go up 6. Not the same situation at all. The Bengals kicking the field goal, made the Steelers have to get a touchdown to win, instead of a field goal to tie.

Well obviously it was a TERRIBLE call since it didn't work. However I would be saying it was a GREAT call if it did work. That is just one of the things that come with being a coach, if it works you are a genius, if it doesn't then your dumb for doing it. It made sense why he went for it, the Colts had momentum on offense now and 2 minutes was a world of time for them. So get the first down, and basically take away most of the clock. However it also obviously would have been smart to punt it too. If they did punt, and Colts still won. People might be saying you should go for it when you have one of the best offenses in the NFL and only 2 yards to go. Just one of those things that since it didn't work, it was a dumb decision.

Long story short, even if he makes it he shows a lack of faith in his defense and that's bad for any coach to do.

Yes it is good to have faith in your team. You say though you should have faith in your defense, however then the same could be said for the offense. You should have faith that your offense which is one of the best in the NFL, and has had a great game could get two yards to basically put the game away. However also a coach it is your job to put your team in the best possible situation to win. Which obviously he thought there best chance was to go for it. That is what comes with being a coach. It would have been a smart decision if they did get it and won the game. I mean if they won, then how wouldn't it have been smart? We see situations all the time in sports, when a coach might look like a genius for one decision, but at another time might look like an idiot if it don't work. That is the chance you take sometime. Obviously the choice he made here was the wrong choice. If they got it, then it would have been the right choice because they probably would have won.

I saw that segment they have with Bruschi, and yeah I know if I was a defensive player I would have been mad about it. However I also would be mad at how easily we let the Colts get that touchdown. I mean they didn't even come close to stopping them, or coming up with a play. I mean maybe that is why he went for it, because he also saw that the Colts figured out the defense. I do remember the last thing that Bruschi did say in that interview was that even though he would have been disappointed at that time. That they would have moved on and better over it quickly, because they have total faith in their coach.
