I think your talking out both sides of your mouth. While I agree the Fort Thomas league is a good one, quite a few Highlands players have come from NKYFL as you have pointed out. As far as where the players end up it's up to the coach to get the players to stay in their home town.

Gotcha. Really a pretty low percentage over the years. Usually really good players.

The staff and program will be fine. I bet if you ask the players they loved playing for these coaches this year and even though record wise it wasnt great Im sure they had fun.

 

Seemed that they were maybe just outmanned this year. They didnt have much size up front although those guys seemed to play hard they were just out matched. They had a quarterback that was his first time ever playing the position who looked good at times and struggled at others which you would expect.

 

There is really only so much a coach can do. These guys are doing it right and they know football. I expect they will have a nice off season and we start to see a difference next year.

The only problems I foresee with the off season program is that so many of your players play other sports. Newport is a small school and students play more than one sport. IMO I believe it would be helpful with all of Newport's programs if all the coaches would sit down together from every sport and come up with a program that would benefit all of them to keep the students involved and working out. IMO this would be a win win for everyone.

Only the best! Most of the college bound athletes from Highlands over the past 20 years have been outside of the Ft. Thomas Pee wee league and courtesy of the NKYFL or BCPFL.

 

Newport will be fine. This off-season they will dedicate themselves to the weight room and notice improvements as early as this spring.

NKYFL is something that can't be judged from. I grew up in that league with the Bengal Tigers and had so many friends do the same but we didn't all go to the same high school. I had this discussion with my dad the other day. The reason HHS is so good is the have the Ft. Thomas league, runs the same offense as HHS. These kids by the time there at Highlands know that offense like the back of their hand. NKYFL you have a number of different teams such as Bengal Tigers, players go to Holmes, cov cath, beechwood. Raiders go to Scott, SK, Dixie. NFF, NCC, Newport. They just don't always stay together. While I think the NKYFL is important in the growth of football and does a great job of what its supposed to do, which is teach the game. It's just not a league where high school coaches can rely on getting the best players to come to their school. A good example J-Load played for the Raiders but went to Highlands. Could you imagine what kind of program Scott could of had with him

 

JL was a St. Pius kid and undoubtedly headed to CovCath if he didn't go to Highlands I'd guess.

I don't remember any from the 07 udefeated team, and that team had quite a few go on to the next level. 06 maybe 2 or 3? 08 maybe 1? I guess this perception comes from the late 90's and Smith and Lorenzon. How about this season? Who will go to the next level, and what JR league do they hail from?

Exactly. I know a lot of guys that I knew from Newport have moved into Fort Thomas so that their sons can play for Mueller. I don't blame anyone from the list above for going somewhere where they'll get publicity and recognition.

I would have to agree if your son is capable of playing at a D-1 school you should put them in the best position to make that happen. If that is what they want. Lets face it the academics are pretty good too.

I agree. But it is small number in that time frame, for the total amount of players that played in college. And you had to go back 5 years to start your list. I didn't say there were not any, and I did say the few were pretty good football players. I was just responding to the post stating that most of the players to move onto college ball from Highlands were not from the FTJRFL. That statement is incorrect. We really need to get this thread back on track:thumb:

You leaving out some standouts... particularily the linemen, but I do want to add fuel to the fire. There are far more standouts from right here, The Land of Milk and Honey, that have continued play in the D-1 ranks!
