Newport Football And Coahing Staff In Review

Featured Replies

Newport's football and coaching staff in review. The new coaching staff took over a established program with two feeder programs NPT middle school and the NFF and came up with a 2 and 8 season. This group of seniors should know what it take to win. Threw the years they play in the NKYFL super bowl 4 time's and won 1. They lost there freshman year to Holy Cross in the championship game. I would like to know what any one else thinks about this.

Newport always seems to have great athletes on there middle school team. What happens to them when they get to high school? Im not very intouch with the Newport program, but I know they seem to have stablity at the Middle school level from what I see of them year in and year out.

I would love to see things turn around for Wildcat football. Covington Holmes has its swings of up & down. Now with an experienced & dedicated, yet bright & young coach, the Bulldogs are enjoying their best team in two decades. The situation at NHS is similar to that of Holmes. Hopefully, the right kind of spirited leadership that is dedicated to the wellbeing of the young men, will come in, or emerge from within, and instill the fire to work hard, be competitive and succeed.

This staff stays with it they will turn things around. They have to buy into the system and things will be fine.

You have an alumni of that school that went on and had a successfull college football career come back and take over as the head coach. You should be happy that you have a young, energetic guy that has a stake in that school and wants to turn it around. Don't put too much stock in youth league and freshman records, the players change and develope differently. There is nothing that Newport needs to worry about, if you want to run him out, call me so I can drive him to Lloyd.

Year one is often a year of changing attitudes and work ethic, as well as new schemes and routines. I would withhold judgment on anything happening there until year two is in the books. The main thing that has to be in place right now is the kids buying in to what the new coach is doing and being willing to do the work that makes a winner.

I think this young staff did a great job coming into the year. The excitement about playing football was there in the beginning of the year but if you don't have the talent it is hard to keep the momentum going. Not to say that Newport didn't have some good athletes. The real tale will be when the off season comes around and it's time to begin preparation for next year. Will the kids come and put in the hard work? I think they will because the coaching staff seems willing to. You don't rebuild Roam in a day. As much as people want to say about this team was alway good when they were younger this isn't the same team. As I recall the best player from when these kids were young is now a starting LB on the best team in Kentucky. Several other kids have moved away or aren't making the grades to play. It's easy to say they were good when they were young so they should be good now. It doesn't alway translate that way. A lot depends on the situation with the program. When coming into a program in the shape Newport was in you must build from the bottom up. I believe that is what the new coaching staff is trying to do. Give them time.

Well said.:thumb:

IMO, you have to look at the feeder program. Is it really drawing, developing the kind of athletes to turn the Wildcat football program? Looking at the Newport win / loss record from the last several years... I would think something needs to be revamped with the youth league. If I was the coach, that is where I would start the change in culture.

I drive by Newport's field on I-471 and it kind of amazes me to see these kids playing football up to and, I think, past Thanksgiving. Who knows when they start their program... IMO, the kids are buring out and had enough of football by the time they are eligible for varsity play.

Some of the coaches on this staff I have worked with in the past. They care about the young men they work with. Not only do they want to make them better football players, but they want to help make them better men. Give them a chance and a little time. Not all victorys are on the score board.

The problem w/ Newport, generally, isn't talent. Newport's problem has always been attitude. Now, you have a coach who, as a high schooler, had the best work ethic of any high school athlete that I had the good fortune to be around. Now you have a coach that has one of the most infectious positive attitudes that you will find. Not coincidentally, he was a central figure in one of Newport's few good teams since the mid-80's. He will spearhead the programs rebirth. However, the whole Newport community has to buy in and support him..

The staff and facilities are in place now the kids and supporters for the program have to step up and help put it all together, and if and when they do watch out 2a football!

NKYFL is something that can't be judged from. I grew up in that league with the Bengal Tigers and had so many friends do the same but we didn't all go to the same high school. I had this discussion with my dad the other day. The reason HHS is so good is the have the Ft. Thomas league, runs the same offense as HHS. These kids by the time there at Highlands know that offense like the back of their hand. NKYFL you have a number of different teams such as Bengal Tigers, players go to Holmes, cov cath, beechwood. Raiders go to Scott, SK, Dixie. NFF, NCC, Newport. They just don't always stay together. While I think the NKYFL is important in the growth of football and does a great job of what its supposed to do, which is teach the game. It's just not a league where high school coaches can rely on getting the best players to come to their school. A good example J-Load played for the Raiders but went to Highlands. Could you imagine what kind of program Scott could of had with him

I think your talking out both sides of your mouth. While I agree the Fort Thomas league is a good one, quite a few Highlands players have come from NKYFL as you have pointed out. As far as where the players end up it's up to the coach to get the players to stay in their home town.

I think the coaching staff is doing a lot of good things. I didn't start this to bash on them. I just wonder why these Newport kids can compete and win there hole life then when they get to varsity it seems to all fall apart for them. I expected a lot out of Coach Rice and his staff. I want to see Newport turn the progam around. I don't know how that will happen. Newport only has a good team every few years. Will the staff be here long enough to put a winning team together.
