Small School Imaginary Playoff? Who wins?

Featured Replies

Let's take the top 8 teams in 1a, 2a and 3a, seed them 1 to 8 and have an imaginary playoff. Who wins?

Upper Bracket

#5 Belfry @ #4 LCA

#8 Somerset @ #1 Ft Campbell

Lower Bracket

#6 Mayfield @ #3 Prestonsburg

#7 Mason Co @ #2 Central

Here are the top 8 small schools according to Massey:

1. Ft. Campbell

2. LCA

3. Murray

4. Central

5. Prestonsburg

6. DeSales

7. Mayfield

8. Belfry

The next schools in order are Corbin, Newport Catholic, Somerset, Mason County, Crittenden County, Beechwood.

That being said, personally, I see little reason to get into the merits of who is in and who is out because this is very easy for me - LCA vs. Ft. Campbell and Ft. Campbell wins. IMO there isn't much debate that those two are the best small schools this year.

I think Mayfield beats LCA in the 1A final. And there is little separation between LCA, Fort Campbell, Central, and Mayfield.

Your comment here gives a Beechwood fan some hope. I like Beechwood's chances against Mayfield (if Beechwood can beat Bellevue again) and if you think Mayfield can beat LCA, then maybe Beechwood has a chance at the title. I just think LCA is head and shoulders above 1A this year.

I would love to see LCA vs Ft Campbell. I think that would just be a fun game to watch!!

So you're saying Mayfield would beat Fort Campbell?

I'm saying if they played five times, Mayfield would win once and maybe twice because they are one of the few teams who can match the athleticism of the Falcons. Of course, the three Falcon wins may be blowouts....:D

I think that would be a huge stretch to even imagine. Not trying to be too much of a homer, so will only state recent facts.

Last FC vs. Mayfield game, Aug 08, (FC 50 - Mayfield 7)

Common opponents this season:

Paducah Tilgman vs. Mayfield, (Mayfield 21 - PT 12)

FC vs. Paducah Tilghman (FC 53 - PT 7)

Mayfield vs. Caldwell County, (Mayfield 10 - Caldwell 14)

FC vs. Caldwell County, (FC 56 - Caldwell 7)

We aren't playing the game with last year's teams. Mayfield is obviously better and has some chemisty issues solved.

As far as the Caldwell game goes, two games played in two totally different weather conditions.

Mayfield is a lot better than people think.

I think Mayfield is the best team in 1A, can't get much better of an opinion then that. Hope they bring the 1A title back to Western Ky! However, they don't match up with FC.

Based on what? Again, they have the athletes to counter some of the Falcons' speed. Where else does Fort Campbell have a decisive advantage? The line? Defense? Break this one down for me.

Ft Campbell would likely beat Mayfield, but, I don't think it would be a blowout. I think Lone Oak could play with the Falcons, as well... Granted, the Falcons have been impressive, but, there schedule hasn't been that good at all. WCentral is there best win and they haven't exactly had a great year. I know they beat BGreen, which was a great win, but, BG beats them handily 19 of 20 times, imo. Mayfield would beat Caldwell handily 19 of 20, as well. Upsets happen.

Is FC better this year over last year? Mayfield is much better. As for the 08 FC-Mayfield match up. Mayfield hung with them for the 1st half and could have been up or at least tied with them. Things started to snow ball in the wrong direction for us and it got out of hand. I thought FC was about a 2 to 3 td favorite not a 5 or 6. This year I'm sure FC would be favored but the gap would be smaller. In 81 or 82 I saw FC roll into Mayfield with the best team in the state of KY and take a 21-0 halftime lead but lost 28-21. Sometimes you never know.

This is a great thread, love the responses.

As I have limited knowledge of teams outside of Fort Campbell, other than what I read on here, I'm going to leave this one to the folks that are in the know.

I also love the "implied" statement of the bolded and underlined portion of the quote below. :notworthy:

IMO if everyone is healthy from each team and they both bring their A game, Fort Campbell wins 5 of 5. With injuries and/or mistakes it could be different, maybe 4 of 5. Of course if it rains I say FC wins 5 of 5.
