It is sad when a state/society has to run to gambling to solve their issues and cannot be creative enough to come up with ways to create meaningful, long-term jobs. Peruse the newspapers on a weekly basis and you will see business after business that are looking to open up plants/stores/factories, etc, etc and searching for the best climate to open those plants. The same radio program that I was listening to, said that Ohio is one of the highest taxed state for business in the country. Have no clue if that is true or not, but if it is, that speaks to why jobs are leaving. Create an evironment for businesses to be successful. Simple concept. Why did Toyota choose Gtown? Because of the tax breaks they received and that has been a boon for the entire state.

I'd also like to know what negative aspects a casino brings to a city / state. And, do you think casinos bring any benefits at all?

If people are going to gamble legally right across a river anyway why not benefit from the tax money?

I sympathize with those families who have someone in their immediate family who is addicted to gambling. Its not just the gambler who suffers. However, just like I don't think alcohol should be banned because a percentage of the folks can't control themselves I, too, do not believe that gambling should be banned because a small percentage become addicts.

I very rarely go to a casino and, when I do, I've never lost more than $40. I take enough to entertain myself & have a chance at winning without losing more than I can afford. I recognize the odds are stacked against me, but I enjoy the entertainment, people, food & drinks associated with casinos. You hit the nail on the head with the alcohol / gambling analogy. :thumb:

November 4, 200916 yr The ONLY issue that holds any water with the vote in Ohio for casino gambling is how much the state is charging for a gambling license. I believe I read that most casino licenses are close to $500 Million and in Ohio they were only asking for $50 or $100 mil. I'll try to find that document. Anything else is just an excuse. It's so easy to gamble right now it's not even funny. I saw on the news last night that a person lost his marriage because of online gambling. Should we take away the internet and lock up Al Gore? Marriage's break up and families are ruined for many reasons, mostly financial. Should they shut down Kohl's because a spouse can't stop shopping there?
November 4, 200916 yr The casino would also only pay a 33% tax rate, which is much lower than other states. Ohio will lose if casino issue passes Downtown Cleveland has so many problems that building a luxury casino somewhere near the center of town is a risk worth taking -- but only if the price is right.
