I think this area, as compared to many metro areas, has more natives. Therefore, you're going to get the fan interest that many metro areas lack.

 

I see no problem with it.

I have at least one shirt from 5+ years ago that I still wear occassionally. I do not wear it out in public, though.

 

It's just one of the few shirts that is still big enough for me.

 

I'm confused why it is "inappropriate" for an adult to wear a BEAT Cov Cath or Highlands shirt? Is it obscene? Vulgar? I don't get it.

I just feel the themed shirts directed towards one school are for the non-adults. The 45 year old man I saw wearing a Beat CovCath shirt at a freshman football game looked strange to me and I was just wondering if I was the only one that thought that. I will also say that I'm a Holy Cross grad and started really caring about CovCath when my nephew, The J-man played for them. I was not a the mud bowl. As a support staff, I have been treated with nothing but kindness by Highlands supports staff. You have to beat the man to be the man and my son was the man in 2006. I just could never see myself ever owning, wanting or wearing a Beat Highlands t-shirt even if it's the game I circle first on my calendar. I just think it should be school vs. school and the adults getting involved creeps me out. That's just me. I like ice cream you like cake. Sorry, bad choice of words. You like brownies! That's better.

You are very much correct. We don't hold a monopoly world wide on favoritism or connections in the work world. I don't intend on diverting much further than my original comments and splitting hairs about it. My original intent was to expose the view of non-natives and their perplexed observation of locals and their obsessions. It seems rather 'small' to them. I'm pretty much in the middle on it all being a local myself. But I do have other interests and can understand what makes them scratch their heads about native folks in the area. Like I originally said, I personally don't have much problem with it until I'm made to feel small by the 'small' when I'm not always in the know, as if it were life or death.

I agree with you. To me, these shirts are fine, for the kids. Like I said earlier, when I see adults wearing them, I think if the adults trying to wear clothes that make them appear young again - you know, like the women wearing bathing suits they have no business wearing anymore!!!

In the spirit of the old saying "Can't see the forest through the trees' many folks that I've spoken to through the years who are not native to the Tri-State find it awfully peculiar that it doesn't seem that many adults in this area ever did actually graduate from high school even though they did get their diplomas. It puzzles them how strong of a concern it is to locals of what high school so and so went to and how close to the tip of the tongue that big game from 1979 was or how much fanatical vigor is applied by local parents. Taking nothing away from anyones fun, and I personally have a certain amount of interest myself, but our local obsession with these such things are in fact exclusively local. I have no problem with that local obsession except for when I'm personally scrutinized for not always being in the know about all the past or present local sports trivia or the fact that I may have multiple interest that divide me from concentrating solely on said local high school events. I've had my share of rolled eyes and giggles directed towards me for such things, but I also remember that nationally we used to giggle at the dad on the old T.V. show 'Married With Children' for not being able to ever let go of his high school quarterback days. I kind of wonder if the writers of that show weren't inspired by the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky area. :confused: :idunno:

Off the top of my head the location of the folks who I have heard make such comments were from Chicago-Illinois, Brittany-France, Superior- Wisconsin, Cincinnati-Ohio, & Ft. Thomas-Kentucky. Personally, I can totally see the attraction and excitement of high school sports. I've bitten many a nail over close big games. Even close, not so big games. Even though I can still understand some outsiders claims. I too can see the charm of our small town interest. In a couple of months KET Channel 54 will be running the movie 'Rebound - A Basketball Story' about Simon Kenton winning the 1981 Sweet 16. I absolutely will not miss this movie and I'm sure the box of Puffs better be close at hand. I wouldn't miss it for the world. I suppose everyone has their measure of interest on a scale of zero to ten. It just perplexes outsiders of how much our interest reads at 11.

Enough about the t-shirts...where did the linemen go to dinner this week?...OH, that was last year's inane thread! LOL. Did anyone mention that the proceeds of the shirts benefit school clubs?

IN an effort to keep the irrelevant thread going I just want to say that I saw the guy with the Beat CovCath shirt on again at the Varsity game on Friday night against Ryle. Now I am hoping he reads BGP and wore it as a statement because if he doesnt and wore that shirt to a Highlands/Ryle game and is 45 then I have to say OH MY.

This is off the HHS/CovCath tee-shirts thread and I apologize in advance but it is along the same lines of the thread with and about parents/adults attending HS sporting events!

 

Saturday afternoon at the Mercy vs NDA volleyball match the place was packed. There were of course a ton of parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents, adult fans etc. but both schools to their credit had quite a few students there also. Both adult groups were sitting on the same side of the floor while both students sections were sitting on the opposite side of the floor from the parents. Understand?

 

Mercy even brought up their cheerleaders in uniform no less and the NDA girls were ready to rock like they did Friday morning. When the game started both groups cheered and cheered (no problem so far) but during a time out who starts cheering first? The Parents! I mean the parents from each team came down on the floor in front of their sections to lead cheers. The NDA/Mercy girls waited patiently while the parents did their thing but when they were done, the girls cheered loud and proud.

 

Now understand if there were not any/few students attending the match well ok maybe but to have students there who were ready and willing to cheer on their team, their fellow students, their school, well DUH parents let the kids do the cheer-leading.

 

Now I attend many, many games and I cheer on the teams by cheering on a good play or even yelling out words of encouragement to the players but to get down on the floor and lead cheers? Duh, been there, done that at CovCath years and years ago! Parents, you had your turn, now let the kids have theirs!

 

Now I know I have make a few parents mad, but again understand, if no students were attending the game, or they refused to cheer, well ok maybe but the students were there and they were cheering.

Way, way off topic. The NDA parent you are referring to has been spelling out P-A-N-D-A-S all year long. He did it where there were VERY FEW NDA students in the stands. It's more of a superstition/tradition thing. You earn your right if you do it all year and don't show up for 1) when you get out of school, or 2) you just come out for the big games. You earn your right to cheer.
