Walton beat Owen at Walton last year by 5 in mid February, and Walton returns everyone. Walton will be bigger and stronger this year. Don't get me wrong I like Owen's bigs, but their guards are not proven and if they were better than the guards last year why didn't they play.

I think you have some very valid points, T & S. I didn't get to see W-V last year...I did see many NKY 8th Region teams, including Grant, Gallatin, Carroll, SK, and Owen, and I really liked Owen's talent. But I also felt that Owen under-achieved last year, and the always-ready rumor mill was telling me that the Rebels just didn't mesh as a team. Give that all the credence a rumor deserves, but it might explain why they played so well at times against top competition and not so well against competition they should have beaten.

 

I'll be keeping a close eye on the Walton-Verona Bearcats. With the All-A on their home court, the Bearcats might just be the team to beat.

Yes, after reading everything over the 8th region this year, only one thing is to be said. The 8th region is going to be very tough this year. No team will be safe. I think we will be watching alot of teams being upset. No team is safe in the 8th. Thats my new slogan.

Just curious but what are you basing your opinion on? SK lost big time contributors to graduation whereas Walton returns everybody. The fact that Walton split with SK last year and with the progression of Walton's big guys makes me feel like they have an even better chance to beat SK this year.

I realize there are a lot of people on here that are high on the guards at Walton. However, I think they can be outstanding if 2 things can happen.

 

1. They play unselfishly and do not worry about their own personal aggendas or point totals. If they play team ball as the game is designed they will have a tremendous season!!

2. They have to cut their turnovers in half. Walton's guards have the highest turnover rate of anyone in the district or region. It is something they have struggled with the past few years. If they can not turn the ball over the team will have huge success. However, you cannot win ballgames with the amount of turnovers they have and then you cannot blame it on the bigs.

In one game last year 2 of the starting guards had double digit turnovers by halftime. That was not out of the ordinary either.

 

I think they can have a fantastic season under thier new coach but I think these are 2 things that if conquered could make them an outstanding team!!

You couldn't blame any game they lost last year on the bigs because the fact is that they didn't really have any bigs. Reynolds was far from being a presence down low and after him there was another huge drop off. The guards lost some games last year, but thats because every game was on their shoulders. You also have to realize that last year was really the first year that it was their team. The previous year they were contributors on a very senior-led team. With another year of experience and the new coach they will be the bright spot on this team yet again, only question will be if the bigs can handle their part of the job.

The guards were the only thing that kept them in the games they won. If they had to depend on their bigs, it would have been a very long season. Hopefully, with a year under their belt, Burns will have improved. Monday was really coming along, and Cottrell should be ready to go, so it should be a good season coming up. :dancingpa
