They screwed up SEVERAL calls all night. I understand if you are making terrible calls both ways, but this was all one sided. Alas, the Rocks overcame the poor officiating and pulled out the victory

This was a fantastic game to watch and typlifies what the St. X./Trinity rivalry is all about. I could not have more proud of this young Tiger team and the JV coaching staff as they battled "the greatest Trinity class ever" (at least until next year :sssh:) tooth-and-nail until the final play in overtime. :thumb:

 

The Trinity team was as advertised...big, strong, fast and talented, and were confronting a Tiger team which they had humbled 35-0 last season as freshmen. However, last night, the Tiger faithful got to watch the variability of adolescent maturity take effect. The St. X. players, who as freshmen were comparatively so small and slow, have now started to rapidly grow in both strength and speed, and were fully ready for the Rock onslaught.

 

St. X. had two excellent opportunities to put this game away in the overtime.

 

The first happened on Trinity's scoring pass reception, when the Tiger DB intercepted the ball and had it fully cradled in the end zone only to have the Trinity receiver latch on and pull it from his grasp for the TD.

 

The second was as mentioned previously, when on a great 4th down throw-back pass play call, the Tiger receiver caught the ball on the 2-yardline. As he turned to cross the goal line, a Trinity player swatted at the grasped ball, and caused him to bobble the ball as he crossed the plane. He was then hit and the ball fell loose in the end zone. Three Tiger players frantically sought to cover the ball, but it barely rolled out of bounds before any of them could secure possession.

 

It is never good to lose a game, but whichever team ended up on the short end of the stick last night had no cause for shame, as they both left everything they had on the field. Sadly for us, it was the Tigers who fell short; but as spectators we had been privileged to witness a game for the ages.

To add some clarification to this comment:

 

1. The "clip" call was made three yards behind the line of scrimmage (out of the tackle box) and the 15-yard penalty was assessed from the spot of the foul resulting in the 18-yard loss from the previous line of scrimmage. The officials explained this to a Trinity coach.

 

2. I'm not saying that the officials were the greatest in the world, but they were definitely not "homers". There were two very obvious major infractions (a horsecollar and a facemask tackle by Trinity) which the linesman failed to call, so I don't think you can honestly say that all the bad or non-calls were against Trinity.

Great insights, OX. This rivalry is special. Talent, speed, size, all the physical factors often fly out the window. Great respect abides.

Typical Shamrocks playing a running back who had over 100 yards in a varsity game and they play him down for JV.(Jack Tenza) And a Quarterback who started for them Varsity the previous Friday now playing JV. WOW!

 

Tiger fans just picture Lamont Mcmurray, Daylen Hall, and the rest of our juniors playing JV. It wouldn't even be close. This just shows how Trinity is desperate to avoid the sweep and get at least one win out of three. :ohbrother:

Matt Wolford is a Junior lineman that played all night on the Tiger Offense as well. It's about time the Tigers learned it's ok to get these kids some game experieince rather than sit for a whole year.

As you have duly noted so many times in the past, this is why the Rocks are so much further advanced when they become senior starters. The thing that has always mystified me about this assertion is why Trinity's seniors tend to start so slowly when they become varsity starters and can no longer play together as JVs? One would think that they would come right out of the starting gate annilating everyone. There is no denying that they have played well at the end of the season, but why doesn't this experence manifest itself at the beginning?

 

With all the two year JV experience your 40 seniors have this year, you will have a monstrous advantage this Saturday over the inexperienced 40 Tiger seniors who were mostly denied this gigantic developmental opportunity. I wonder if we should even bother to show up.

 

Once again as a fan my thanks to both schools go out to the sophomores, juniors who get little to no varsity time, as well as the current and former varsity starters (at least from one team), who provided us with a superbly competitive JV contest. :thumb:

Most of that depends on the QB learning the offense. It takes a while for our QBs to learn the offense which is why we look so much different at the end of the season as opposed to the beginning. At least when we don't have a returning starter.

It has more to do with first year starters than anything else. The offense gets more complex on varsity than at JV and freshman levels. Besides you said, basically and at the basic level you are right. Our QBs are generally asked to do more than hand off the ball and the occasional play action as such it takes time to master everything Cov and Beatty throw in at the varsity level.

Former QB's that are now Seniors, James Ryan is a DB and Wes Jackson is a Tight End. Both were moved at the beginning of last season after Kragthorpe won the back up spot as a sophomore behind Smyth.
