Jaggers left, they did lose some solid players from last year and a 1st year head coach.

 

I remember 4 years ago, North Laurel led at Mercer 20-8 going into the 4th quarter and then played to hang on to the lead. Mercer came back and took the win. Sounds like the flip happened last night with South. This is a very big win for the Cardinals because it ends the losing streak against some pretty good teams and gets them that all important district win. I commented that they would make the playoffs and this was a HUGE step for them. Not sure on turnovers, but I would guess that they didn't turn it over as much last night as they did the first several games of the season.

Huge win for the Cards. District wins are always big but this one has to help their confidence. The Mehler kid told they would win before they got on the bus. He said they weren't going to ride that far to lose.

Very tough schedule, very young team. They start 11 sophomores out of 22 positions.

Apparentley they weren't. To struggle against a one-win team at home and then lose tells me South is the BETTER team.:idunno:

I wouldn't call it struggling when you are ahead or tied the whole game as Mercer was. It was 21-20 when Mercer fumbled the ball on their own 34 yard line(hence the term, "gave the game away") and South Laurel took advantage of the short field and scored. I am not prepared to say who the better team is because in some situations the better team can lose(hence the term, "upset"). While I am not calling this an upset, I'd venture to say that Mercer would win this match up 7 times out of 10. If you have seen Mercer play this year other than this game, when coldweather says, "Mercer coaches tried to sit on a 1 point lead and played not to lose instead of playing to win.", then I know exactly what he is saying. IMO, Mercer had no business losing this game.

Beating a one-win team by a mere ONE POINT at HOME is struggling. Bottom line - Mercer lost, which equals South was and is the better team.
