September 22, 200917 yr Looks like they might be changing the name of Turkey Foot Middle School. A new building is currently being built about 50 feet from the existing school, and some parents think it's time for a change in name too. They don't want the school being named after a road. The school has been around for years, and I'm guessing these parents are new to the area. IMO, it's stupid to even consider changing the name. And in the day of political correctness, some parents think they should also change the mascot name as it is currently Indians.
September 22, 200917 yr Author Why would this even be considered? I have no clue. The mascott thing doesn't surprise me one bit, but the school name change??
September 22, 200917 yr Author There's a link to a survey on Turkey Foot's website regarding the name change. I don't know if they'll take the answers into consideration or not, but it's worth a try.
September 22, 200917 yr I guess I can understand the Indians part, but changing the actual school name seems silly. Something like the Turkey Foot Gobblers or Hokies (a nod to VPI) might be cool.
September 22, 200917 yr I read in the paper the other day that there is a trend toward naming schools after the street on which they are built. Boone County is already doing this, I believe. The idea is that it makes it easier for people to find the school on Google Maps or their GPS.

September 22, 200917 yr I have no opinion on whether the school name should be changed. However, I think a mascot/nickname change is long overdue. I cannot begin to fathom a reason why nicknames such as Indians, Redskins, or the like were ever remotely considered by schools or teams, let alone approved, in the first place. (By the way, I'm not one to usually cry foul when it comes to things being politically incorrect. I do stand firmly on the inappopriate nickname issue though.)
September 22, 200917 yr What is so offensive about a mascot being an Indian??? Maybe we should remove all inferences to all groups Spartans, Vikings, Raiders, etc... I feel that the mascot is an expression of what you believe your team to be. To me an Indian is an expression of a proud culture, that believes in tradition and values.....nothing wrong with that!!!! As far as the name of the school...Leave it alone as well.

You'd think that schools would be in Google Maps or GPS anyway, regardless of the school's name. What schools in Boone Co. are named after a street? Camp Ernst Middle School. Any others?

If the true Indian culture is what the school is hoping to represent via its nickname, then I guess you would have a point. The next obvious answer to this question comes in the form of another question: Would you still be okay if other races were used as nicknames? I could get creative and cite a few examples here, but I don't think that is necessary. When it comes down to it, if as a society, we do not make a mockery of a particular race by making it a school mascot due to the potential outcry that would ensue, I think we should give all races that same courtesy.
September 23, 200917 yr You change school names you get to name new staff from principle down..... On a lighter note I went to Turkey Creek in Pike County. Nicknames through history of the school - Red Devils Gobblers Wildcats

Really??? This is America why would a reference to Indians make you automatically assume India? My grandfather who by the way was Indian would have been offended by that remark. We are talking about mascots not nicknames. My son played for the Turkeyfoot Indians and the few games my grandfather got to watch, he was flattered. I think the race thing is way off base. If that is the case I'm sure we should all have cause to be upset and offended by every mascot ever named. Along the history of the inception of mascots how many times has the reference been made to white or black? I guess if we had common views on this my suggestion would be to do away with mascots altogether....no one culture, special interest group, race, religious affiliation, athiest, etc.. would have the forum to be offended. This is the problem with this country...we all take ourselves waaayyy to seriously and we don't take the true injustices seriously enough.
