Hamstring issues

Featured Replies

My 13 year old daughter pulled her hamstring almost 2 weeks ago running the bases on the first day of softball practice.

I'm pretty sure it's a pull because there was no bruising or evidence of blood pooling on the back of her thigh.

She still can't shake it though. We've tried Cold right after practice (she doesn't run and they've moved her to first base because she won't sit out of practice totally) and then alternate heat and cold.

Still she tweaks it nearly everyday.

Those of you who have dealt with this before, what do you know that works that gets her back to mobility the quickest and best.

Rest. As long as she keeps tweaking it it's not going to heal. Have her sit.

:thumb: You nailed it. I am sure she wants to play, but all you can do is ice and rest. You can get a wrap that keeps it tight and helps a great deal, but a hamstring has to rest to heal.

You can try ice whirlpools, they do a great job in aiding the healing process. But they are no fun. And if there is pooling or bruising, it is probably just a minor pull and will heal if she rests it.

In the words of Elmer Fudd ''West and wewaxation at wast".

As mentioned, rest is the only cure. As long as she continues to play, it will not heal. I pulled my quad my sophomore year and played the entire spring and summer with it pulled. It didn't fully heal until late summer after baseball season was completely over. I wrapped it as tight as possible to get me through the games and practices, which helped a great deal.

Thanks for the advice.

The coach is sitting her in the first game tomorrow.

She has two try-outs on Thursday night and the 25th for an AAU travel team. I think she'll go to the try out on Thursday (after Middle School practice) and do some things but she is really going to have to heal by the 25th if she wants to put her best out there and make the squad.

Everywhere I turn it is REST. I appreciate what you're saying. I just didn't want to hear it. :D Neither did she.

I did order her a hamstring compression wrap to wear next week. I figure she'll probably be doing this off and on for a long, long time.

Also keep in mind that it is a good idea that once she feels like she can play to give her 2-3 more days of rest as it is easy to reaggrevate that injury!

The wrap will help some, but rest is the only thing that will actually heal it.

I pulled my hamstring last summer. It was absolutely horrible. It popped while I was rounding 3rd base in a softball game. I've had a few injuries & this was the worst one I've ever had. I was out of action for a month. Granted, my "rehab" wouldn't have exactly been approved by many (any) doctors, but it was bad.

I waited about a month or so, and then returned to play 1st base (because I couldn't do much else.) During my 1st at bat I stroked one down the line, took one casual step out of the box & it popped again. Not as bad this time, but still painful.

Hamstring injuries are the worst.

Also I'd find wraps for both legs and have her wear them whenever she runs after she heals. I tore mine 10 years ago and had to retire from softball and it still bothers me some even now. I wear wraps now and they help, but no quick starts for me. Keep us posted and good luck to her.

It's been said, but rest is the only thing that will heal it. The wrap will help a little, but now much.

Has Middle school softball already started?

Here in Virginia, the Middle School Girls Softball plays in the fall so the diamonds are free for the High School girls in the Spring.

AAU ball is in the Fall, Spring and Summer with workouts in the Winter.

Thanks everyone. I showed my daughter the thread last night and she said, "Oh, I guess staying off it is the right thing."

It's amazing as a parent that I am dumber than dirt but when the rest of the world says the same thing I do, you guys are Dr. Kildare!

I'll keep you posted in the next few weeks how her seasons starts and what she tries to do. :thumb:

Sit her, now, and rest her. They take forever to get better. Make sure that she is stretching. I had one that lasted my whole JR. season of college b/c I tried to rush back.
