You're right oldrambler, in no way shape, form, or fashion did Raceland deserve to win this game. They just did not execute and did not do the little things that they need to do to win. We once again had the ball several times inside the 30 yard line and failed to score. You can not win games that way.

 

And, it was clear that the Fleming County players wanted this win much more then the Raceland players did. And, they got it. Hats off to them.

Disclaimer: First I want to say that Fleming County deserved to win this game, and did. Raceland did not deserve to win this game and didn't. No outside factor will change my mind on these facts. And nothing I say after this is meant to say that Raceland lost because of the officiating.

This is the only officiating crew that I have ever complained about on BGP. Raceland has had this crew twice before, and after the third time last night, they are still the worst officiating crew to ever step foot on a football field. This crew should never be allowed to officiate a JFL game, let a lone a varsity game. In the two previous games that they have officated a Raceland game, Raceland won both by large margins, so don't think I am only complaining because Raceland lost this game. And, I have a feeling if you asked the Fleming County coaching staff their opinion, they would overwhelming agree with me on all these facts. So, this is not sour grapes. This crew is terrible, and if this was a district game, or a playoff game, they could have easily decided the outcome of this game.

 

One example of their ineptitude: Raceland QB throws a pass from Raceland endzone, while under pressure, the pass almost hits a RB in the foot, down field out of the end zone. Safety is called (intentional grounding). Two points are credited to Fleming County. Both teams line up for Fleming County to receive a Free Kick. The official then singles that Fleming County was assessed a facemask penalty on the "Safety" play, then begin to assess that penalty on the Free Kick. Now, most would know if the defense is assessed a penalty, on the same play as the offense is assessed a penelety, the penalties offset and you have to replay the last down. Well, that is what the officials figured out, right before Raceland kicked the free kick, and had the two points taken off of the board and replayed the last down.

 

Fleming County's coach was livid, and I don't blame him, the facemask was never mentioned until both teams were lined up for a free kick.

 

Now, this doesn't account for a no call on a pass interference on Fleming County in another play, that the official said it was not called because the pass was "Uncatchable". Uncatchable? Most people that know anything about high school football, knows that their is not such thing as "Uncatchable" in high school football. Pass interference, in pass interference, no matter if the pass is uncatchable or not.

 

This does not account for the fact the ball was spotted incorrectly multiple times, for both teams. You never knew where the ball was going to be spotted. Even the PA ancouncer would say, "tackled for a loss", then have to come back and say, "No, that was a three yard gain". Now, the PA guy is not the official spotter, but everyone could see when a player was tackled behind the line, obviously for a loss, then the ball is spotted for a three yard gain. And, sometimes, for both teams, a player would fall forward for an obvious one or two yard gain, and the spot would be for a loss. Then the PA guy would come back across and say "no that was a one yard loss".

 

Again, this does not account for the four of five times that a penalty flag was thrown and a penalty was stepped off and no signal was given and the coaches had to walk out on the field and ask what was called. Or the one penalty that was marked off at seven yards in the middle of the field. What penalty is worth seven yards?

 

And on numerous occasions there were official conferences in the middle of the field that seemed like they were ten minutes long after a flag was thrown. I know that sometimes officials have to confer on a call, but how many games have you seen where they have to do it eight times in one game.

 

One Fleming County fan said, that that crew was not supposed to be allowed to call games at Fleming County anymore, so this is not just a Raceland fan going off about a loss and blaming the officials, this is a real concern. Several Horse Collar tackles were not called, one on Raceland, two on Fleming County. Several Facemask calls were not called, that were obvious, head turned, two on Fleming County. This is a safety issue. This crew should not be able to call high school football games. They are not capable, pure and simple.

That sounds terrible Ram. I hate that officials would be allowed to Ref high school games if they have no idea what they are doing. They are only hurting the kids that are involved because of all of their hard work getting prepared for the game so should the officials. Sounds like your guys association needs to do smoehting about it. Have they been contacted? Or do they just don't care?

In the interest of fair press, I have to say, after seeing officials from all over most of the state, I really appreciate the job that the officials in North-Eastern Kentucky do. I try to tell them every chance I get how much I appreciate their dedication to their profession. Some times we all take what they do for granted, but when you witness a crew like mentioned above, you really appreciate the job the good officials do.

 

Thanks Brian, Rusty, Cory, Ed, Larry, PD, Berry, Daddy Clark, and all the other officials in North-Eastern Kentucky, you all do a great job, and I apologize for all the times I took you for granted. And also thank you to the late Mike Grimm, he wasn't a perfect official, but always did his best and if he missed something, I always knew that it wasn't for a lack of trying, and he always had the kid's interest at heart.

This crew is not in our association, I believe they are in the Lexington Association. If I am not mistaken, that association as well as the KHSAA has been contacted in years past about this crew by multiple schools. As least that is what I have been told. I pray, for your sake, you don't see this crew in action. If you do, you will know in short order, that this is the crew that Ram was talking about.

When the PA announcer says something along the lines of "___________ (fill in the team name) apparently made a first down", after the chains are moved, there are probably problems.

 

I have to concur with the thoughts on this thread. Both teams missed numerous opportunities, Fleming County made the big plays at the end of the game to win. I didn't have a dog in the fight, and I don't think it affected the final outcome, but the officiating was atrocious.

 

And the Panthers MUST find a way to get the ball in the hands of its speedsters way more often come district time.

I have a question. Why isn't the player from Fleming who threw that trick pass slinging the ball more? Or was that just a fluke pass? He has a cannon! I haven't seen a throw like that in high school football since Cosby from Paris back in the early 2000's!

I also want to congratulate Steven "Scuba" Mitchell on his touchdown. The 300+ big boy lived every linemans dream by scooping up a loose ball and rumbling for a TD (and looked good doing it). He almost did the same thing in the opener at Nicholas but they were finally able to bring him down. I coached Scuba in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade football and he is one of my all-time favorite players and kids. He always wanted to run the ball in pee-wee football but because of our weight limit on ball carriers never got the chance. I love the effort he is showing on the field and I'm very proud of him!

 

Also, I agree with Ram for the most part on his critique of the officiating. They are pretty much a mess. I'm not sure on the safety though. I am not 100% clear on the HS rules but the QB appeared to be in the grasp or being brought down by a Fleming defender as he threw the ball to avoid the sack. The ball did fall near a Raceland receiver but could that have been some kind of "in the grasp" rule, since the QB was still in the tacklebox area? Not sure when the facemask occured but it sure confused the crew as did several other calls etc...

I don't have a problem believing that. I was in shock how far he heaved that one with accuracy.

Gray is a tremendous athlete with alot of potential.

Which begs the question, why isn't he the starting QB? This kid is probably the best pure athlete in FC high school. You can't argue with 2-0, but sometimes think you could reverse his and Clark's position. Has Clark ever played WR with that speed?
