Does legalized abortion control the crime rate?

Featured Replies

This is a fairly well know, but controversial theory proposed in a book I'm currently reading. Basically what the author says is that the children who would not be aborted when abortions were illegal are now being aborted. And since "unwanted children" are more likely to commit crimes, that a relationship develops, where more readily accessible abortions lower the crime rate.

I want to also point out that I'm not looking for religious reasons why abortion is wrong or any bible verses whatsoever...just a look at the topic proposed.

I would think it might control quite a few things. It certainly makes the population smaller initially, and then of course those abortions will not have children of their own.

It likely makes for fewer people on entitlement programs. But it also means fewer kids in classrooms, which costs jobs of teachers. It's fewer tax payers for the government's future. I'm sure you guys can think of more.

I'm not posting abortion as right or wrong, just answering the question with some thoughts.

Probably, but so would killing the poor or minorities. This is not to say that the poor or minorities commit or don't commit more crime, but that they are prosecuted more for it, which is what affects the crime rate.

What about white collar crime? If the conversation here were only about violent crime, I'd agree. But since it's so generalized, what about that?

But that isn't legal nor will it ever be, so not really a valid topic.

BUT, abortion is legal and we hear all the bad things about it. It seems that there is an uintended effect that doesn't get discussed much, one that I'm sure some would think is a good thing.

Banker's daughters get knocked up too.
Bankers daughters could afford "safe" illegal abortions before Roe V. Wade.

Are you talking about the thread topic or my claim that the poor and minorities make up the largest percentage of the crime rate? I'm not sure what you are asking.

It is a good thing, but it is coming from a bad thing (abortion).

Assume that President Obama proposed killing the poor to save money. The program got started and one by one the poor were dying. The crime rate would go down. Would it matter? It is still wrong.

Aren't you happy that I encouraged you to start this thread. :D

Since an aborted baby has no chance at a crime free life OR a life of crime, ... it is impossible to say what impact, if any, abortions may or may not have on the crime rate. It is pure speculation and cannot be measured in any quantitative method. Any theory on this is just that, theory. Opinions may vary on one side or the other, but there is no way to prove either side.

Preposterous notion. If that's the case, let's get down to the nitty gritty. If the prison population is mostly black, should we get fine tuned and promote black abortions? If those in prison that have committed white collar crime come mostly from white accountants, should we then promote the abortion of babies that would be born to white accountants?

Simply retarded notion IMO.

Kinda thought you'd say that.

Statistically it isn't. However, I do agree with you on the dangers of using something like this to justify nefarious policy prescriptions.
