September 2, 200917 yr Author That seems nothing like your original question, of "Does attending mass/church/services make you a better person". Does the fact that you go to Mass more than I go to my church make you a better person than me? Why does anyone have to feel they are better than anyone else because they go to Mass each Sunday? It's not about being better than anyone else. It's about being the best you that you can be. More examples of me messing up this thread, and I'll admit it. What I mean to say is that going to Church is the right thing to do, because it involves self-sacrifice for a greater cause. I wasn't trying to compare myself to anyone else, honestly, I'm just trying to point out that going to worship in a Church setting is part of doing the right thing.

It's about being the best you that you can be. The question I have to ask after reading most of this thread is: why do those people who don't regularly attench church have to act so much better than those that do?
September 2, 200917 yr Does attending mass/church/services make you a better person? For me its a yes attending church services does make me a better person. The reason I go to church is to worship God. I need to know more about Jesus and his teachings which help guide me in making daily decisions. I truly feel that life here on earth is merely a dress rehearsal. Hebrews 10:25 (New International Version) Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
September 2, 200917 yr The question I have to ask after reading most of this thread is: why do those people who don't regularly attench church have to act so much better than those that do? While I'm not sure if that's aimed toward me, I don't feel as though I'm a better or worse person because I don't attend. I do, however, feel as though those who "put on airs" about going to church are also no better or worse than me, despite their hypocrisy.
September 3, 200917 yr The act of going to church does not make anyone a better person. Going to church as 1 form of your weekly worship can put you in a position to better hear God and know the mind of Christ. Healthy sermons about doing God's will by serving your brothers and sisters can help you to grow. Spending time in a small group like Sunday school where you can talk about your daily struggles and your struggles with scripture can help you reach a better understanding. None of this makes you a better person, but it certainly can help.
September 3, 200917 yr Christian Fellowship makes you a better person. You can get christian fellowship at church. Just going does nothing to make you better if you are not WORSHIPING and or getting that fellowship.

It's about being the best you that you can be. I agree with you rockmom! I attend Mass because I feel a need to attend and I honestly get something out of it each Sunday. Even when we went on vacation or I was away on business we/I attended Mass and whats funny no matter where we attended Mass at, I felt at home. My daughter loved visiting all the different Churches we attended Mass at from the Church in South Carolina where the Pope had been the year before, to a very small country church off the Blue Ridge Parkway where the local parishioner music was the best I have ever heard. We have been to a Mass in the Grand Canyon, Wachington DC, and in Churches were the art work was so beautiful and inspiring that it took my breath away. We have been to Mass at some Churches that fed us breakfast, as that is what they did after mass and wouldn't let us leave without eating with them. It's funny but I sometimes get embarrassed that some of our Catholic Churches in NKy don't treat our own Parishioners as well as we have been treated while visiting Catholic Churches on vacation around the USA. I am so happy that in attending Mass and teaching my Daughter why my faith is so important to me, she has followed and as a result of that teaching, she is very, very active in her faith and in the MSU Newman House.
September 3, 200917 yr One of the misconceptions of church services is that it is about me, me, me, me, me. What about serving others and being at church services to benefit single mothers who want to attend and need a nursery/toddler class full of volunteers so that she can attend a service to lift her spirits. What about being in service and when an acquaintance comes to you, you are there to say hi and make a comment that might lift their spirits for the week? Or maybe even you are able to solve a situation that they are struggling with? Church services are not about us, us, us, us only. They are about a time for the church to gather together and in mass worship the Lord and provide uplifting to other members of the congregation.

September 3, 200917 yr Merely showing up for services does not (by itself) make you a better person just as putting on a white coat and stethoscope doesn't make you a doctor. As mentioned already in this thread, it's all about what is in your heart that matters.
