I believe Pete Rose has everything to do with people voting that using PED's is a greater baseball sin than gambling.

 

What's wrong with believing both are wrong and should be punished severely, but also believing PED's are worse? It's not right/wrong, it's which is a greater sin. As for Rose, the HOF posthumous would be fine with me.

There is nothing wrong with believing both are wrong. I believe both are wrong, but to say PED's are a worse baseball sin just doesn't add up IMO. You'll never convince me that your opinion isn't swayed because of your love for Pete Rose growing up a Reds fan. If it had been Steve Garvey that had been banned because of gambling, and not Pete Rose, I don't think we would been having this discussion.

It's all about perception right now in baseball. If steroids were more severely punished then everyone would say they are the bigger sin. Betting on baseball is not the bigger sin IMO, and I don't know how it ever could be. If a manager bets on his team to win then he already feels like he has a chance. He is confident about his team and what they can do.

 

Right now I'd say there is no difference between betting on your team to win than the way most managers already manage the game. Just by leaving a pitcher in too long, or having a pitcher throw a complete game with 140 pitches, all could be signs of a manager making bets on the game, but we'll never know.

 

Steroids are a temp solution that hurts the body as well as the mind. Here is a prime example, a lot of people have quit watching baseball due to the fact you don't know who's clean and who's not. They call it impure and it happens everyday. Anytime fans boo Manny or A-Rod now it's because they are steroid users. Fans are turned off by players and supplements they take.

 

If Pujols was to bet on the Cardinals to win tonight and tomorrow MLB found out and everything was leaked and made public do you honestly think people would boo him at other parks?

What makes you think that if somebody has a gambling problem that they are always going to bet on their team to win. Gambling in baseball would forever ruin the game.

I'm not sure, but if it is I'm certain it's due to the struggling economy, and not related to steroids.

I've said all along, I cherish THE game more than A game. Records and statistics are more important in baseball than games being bet on, IMO. Even when someone bets their team to lose, or doesn't bet at all that day.

Players playing through pain for (at least what they believe at be) the good of the team happens every day. Sometimes they are right to do so , sometimes it's a mistake and they (and their team) would have been better served to let the backup play.

 

Explain to me how a player with an injury who elects to play because he genuinely thinks he's better than his backup is hurting the game. I don't follow your comment that their #1 priority is to play for themselves to win and not their team. If they've bet on their team to win, then it's the same thing.

 

I'm certainly not condoning betting on the game, but there is indeed a big difference in betting on your team to lose and betting on them to win.

2. You have the potential to get into lots of debt to your bookie. You now are under his thumb and may be forced to help throw a game to pay back your debt.

Once again you have ignored the obvious problem with gambling. It doesn't matter whether its FOR your team or AGAINST your team. You run the risk of falling under the thumb of your bookie which leads to bad things for the game ie throwing it.

We have witnessed Manny's return and no one blinked. Its , as I said, a non-issue to many. Unfortunately.
