Like it or not, pro athletes are heroes and role models to a ton of kids these days. Shouldn't be that way, but it is. If taking steroids helps make you the all-time HR hitter, then gee, it must be the thing to do.

 

And conversely, I've not seen anyone say that gambling is no big deal and wouldn't harm the game. It most certainly would.

How many people haver quit watching the game since the steroid scandal broke? How many would quit watching if they knew the games were fixed?

You mean a mess like when records (like them or not, they are an important part of baseball and its history) are tainted, when certain players - and therefore their teams - get an advantage over their opponents, when the fans becomes disgusted with the ongoing charade and saga of lies and deceit, when players basically tell to kids that it's okay to cheat and take potentially dangerous drugs into your body to help improve your standing over your peers? That kind of mess?

To me at least, the stats of today's players are in question. Stats are what we as fans can talk about when comparing my Dads generation of players to my generation of players to my Daughter generation of players, and her generation of players have cheated and cheated big time by using drugs. If it were just one or maybe even two but a large amount of today's players seem to be doing drugs.

 

Stats mean more to baseball fans than to any other fan base in any other sport! As I said it is a way to link the old with the new and no other fans in sports do stats like baseball fans do stats. How many fans like me sit and watch the game and keep the stats for a Basketball game or a football game, just for the pure fun of doing it?

If the stats mean nothing because they are tainted then you have destroyed the game!

To clarify my earlier statement, I still think gambling is the bigger deal. I was just pointing out that I don't find it sensible to sluff off the PED thing as "no big deal."
