Newport Basketball Player to Cov Cath

Featured Replies

Hopefully the team will be able to stay healthy, and the experience the guys gained last year, even though it was a very rough season, will help this year. I look for a lot of improvement over last year.

With Mattie, Brandon and Trey, there are at least three players who did not playing last year, looking to play this year. So, wonder which guys that played last year might not make it this year. Could be interesting

If nothing else CovCath should have a lot more depth. With Pauly running the point they should have good depth with Mashinot and Reidinger from the junior class as well.

My "edit" was because I originally asked a question that I then found the answer to in the thread. It was not a comment on your post.

Understood, but I was and still are, curious as to your opinion. You seem to know a lot about the Cov Cath basketball team, and I would like to hear your thoughts. Seems to me that there is a chance some guys who have played a couple years as a Colonel, may not be able to this year.

If Trey Evans plays like I saw him this summer , yes, some guards are going to lose PT. I think you will see Pauly and Trey in the starting lineup with Maschinot, Reidinger, and Hudepohl coming off of the bench.

Counting on Mattie at this point is a stretch. I hope I'm wrong but I don't think you can pencil him in yet.

Assuming Michael Robinson comes back you'll see him, Connelly, Thelen, and Wellbrock getting a lot of the PT in the frontcourt. You will have Schult contributing as well.

The key IMO is Pauly staying healthy.

I did not see Trey Evans much in the summer, but when I did, he never played defense, unless he steps that aspect up, I am not sure how much time he will get. He was the best outside shot they had when I saw them. I never really thought about Mattie much until Coach's comments. Have not seen any open gyms, so not sure how he is doing either.

You did not mention either Wilson, or Heimbrock. I would think Cole would get as much PT as Michael and Cubby.

Also - I have never seen Brandon play, so I assuming that since you did not mention him, you do not see him playing much?

Regardless, I think with the amount of time these guys have played together, we are in for a better year than last (again as you said - if they stay relatively healthy)

My fault. I knew I was leaving someone out. Wilson actually looked pretty solid this summer. He looks to have more confidence in his shot. Hembrock will give good minutes as well. He and Robinson are different type players - complementary players to each other actually.

Depth will not be a problem.

I don't know who the kid is. I did see Newport JV play last year and if he didn't start for them he's not outstanding. Their JV was solid but no one jumped out at you. He's young so he has time to work on his game and grow. I'd expect nothing out of him at the varsity level this year.

Heimbrock is going to be one of the more consistent players on the team. Besides Pauly and Thelen, these guys (as talented as they may be) have a tendency to disappear for quarters at a time. Heimbrock will be a consistent contributor. And, FWIW, this team is deep enough that when one guy is off, someone else is usually on.

BT is a great athlete and young man. Why not transfer from Newport to achieve a quality education and coaching.

You have not seen him in playing action because he sustained several injuries in 2008. This young man is "one to watch", has natural athletic ability and is a good asset to Cov Cath.

Will be playing JV and is talented enough to start on the Varsity basketball. I heard he will go out for track and football next year. When you see him, support him and the team!!

Sorry to hear of the injuries but hope he has recovered. He is certainly a welcome addition to the basketball team, and if he is as talented as you say, I am sure he will see the varsity floor this year. As far as track goes, what events will he compete in? After winning state this past year, the team returns many of the guys who scored points but did lose some strong guys to graduation

I watched him play for Newport Firefighters, Newport Middle and was QB for Newport freshmen until injured @ Cov Cath opener last yr his line slept. He's a sprinter. I'm sure Cov Cath will get him back in motion.

Thats good to hear, as we lost maybe our best sprinter last year, Van Sant to graduation.

He was a fine player on the hardwood for Newport Middle when I watched him but didnt have much of a supporting cast so had to do most everything and at times struggled. In a good system with good coaching he will be a good player.

What's the status of Trevor Welbrock with Covington Catholic?

What else would it be besides he's playing?

Not to threadjack, but Van Sant is getting some quality time for the Georgetown Tigers as a freshman.

That is great to hear. He is an outstanding athlete and an even better young man.
