I agree, and I said that they had not been playing team ball for a few years. Hopefully that is a thing of the past, and I think that it is.

 

What was their summer schedule like? The team & staff should already know how competitive they are with teams around the state.

 

I guess I should have been more clear, but I was replying to Legacy's statements that indicated last year was the first year where we did not see the TEAM ball from the Colonels.

 

As for the summer schedule, I did not see all of it, but they played in the Derek Smith Shootout, Madison Central, at Lex Cath, in Richmond, in Loiuisville and some local games do not remember all of them. Not sure of all the teams they played. I think it complares with most of the summers they have played in the past.

I was extremely disappointed when I watched the Colonels play the past 2 years due to their inability (or unwillingness) to play as a team. For years, Covington Catholic has relied on 8-10 guys, a great team effort & solid team defense. I saw none of that.

 

I think they'll be much better this year. Undoubtedly, part of that will be health. The other part, IMO, will be the return of a team concept.

 

As for the past two years you can't really say that the team play concept will return. 2 years ago they made it to the regional finals and lost to Holmes. Yes they certainly could have won that game however someone decided to take the game in his own hands by taking too many shots and making bad choices resulting in a loss. However that Holmes team was stacked as well(Not like that loss was so schocking). The problem with that team was there was too many head strong players with bad attitudes and there wasn't enough ball to go around for everyone. Nonethless, that team was very successful knocking off #2 in the state Lex Cath at their home opener, taking Mason County with Darius Miller to the wire two times, and knocking off the golden boys from Elliot County.

 

When this team played as a team they were hard to beat. IMO, one of the best in the state.

 

Last year, as I said earlier was a fluke of a season that just never turned around. When you lose your point guard who started last season and was ranked in the top 5 of the region it has its affects. There were only 2 players on that team who had varsity experience. (Maile and Shover) Not to mention they both as jr's led the team in scoring. Shover also led in assists.

 

Ives, Counts, Isler, Sorrell, Wellbrock, Pauly, and Machinot never even played in a varsity game up to that point. All they had was Maile and all Maile thought was Maile!

 

Plain and simple it's hard to have a successful team when you don't have a pointguard, young and inexperienced, and only have one guy to rely on who isn't going for the team concept!

 

If you look at past Colonels teams, this team was similar in make up just without a point guard. However the talent of the supporting cast wasn't as great as previous years.

 

The overall issue is other schools are getting just as good if not better talent then CCH and it's starting to catch up. CCH's doesn't even have one player in the top ten this year and they were ranked luckily as preseason #10. Which is controversial. This has to be the worst combinations of rankings in over a decade!

 

Whether anyone wants to accept it or not CCH is going to struggle really bad this year and it's because of multiple reasons! 1. The level of talent on their team is really weak compared to Holmes, Boone, and Highlands etc. 2. Inexperience at the varsity level will kill them. 3. Poor outside shooting and lack of a true total package player who can really carry them (Most likely Thelen but not until senior year)

 

Yes this year they might play more team ball but it's because they have no choice not too. They don't have those solid 2 to 3 players that carry the team and have a solid supporting cast.

Yes it was a surprise when Coach Tranter would be on the sidelines getting the guys to play some D - an there was one player who was not doing it. Like I said, maybe, no hopefully he will be active defensively, and not just reach out with his hands like young kids do. We will see.

The bottom line is when you start at a new program you have to exert 110% effort on both ends of the court to prove yourself. You arent just going to walk into a program like CCH and play because you have a nice offensive game. Listerman demands his kids to play Defense so he better step it up if that is a true assessment of his recent play.

I couldn't agree with you more and that is why I was pointing it out. If he continues to only want to play offensively, he will not be on the floor much to help out the Colonels as everyone is saying he will.

 

I can't wait to see the make-up of the team this year. The official try-outs begin next week, and first cuts are supposed to be next Friday. Obviously we still have some guys playing football and soccer, but we will begin to see who coach feels will be his best team. As they will be young, it will be interesting to see how it plays out

That is good news.I like his quickness on the floor. When he gets some confidence, I think he will be able to drive to the basketball extremely well.
