When is Cov Cath's first hoop game?

Just wondered, hadn't seen him mentioned.

CCH will struggle immensely this year simply due to the fact of how good the competition around them is. They have vary seldom proven players. Wellbrock can rebound and thats it. You can't expect him to put up many points. Thelen will be CCH's best option. He has improved his post game and has a nice jump shot. I look for Trey Evans if all things go right, to make the most impact at the guard position. Pauly is fundamental and tries hard however compared to the more athletic guards in the region he won't be able to keep up. (Holmes gaurds, Gabbard, Popp, Mcleish, Stephens) Trey brings a little more athleticism to the table but his inexperience at the varsity level may hurt them. IMO, this is definitely going to be a huge rebuilding year for the Colonels. Last year, yet depleted lost all of their main players. For most of this team it will be their first year of varsity action. With teams like Holmes, Boone, Highlands, Ryle the Colonels will be lucky to crack the top 5 or so by the end of the year.

The Colonels X factor will definitely be Conley. Kid is very athletic and can make things happen.

Trey Evans may lact experience playing school ball but he has played AAU ball for a while with Holmes players R. Johnson, J.Johnson, E.Pittman, D. Avery and W.Slusher so he should be more then capable of handling himself at the varsity level.

 

I had heard alot about this kid, but the times I saw him this summer, I have to admit I was disappointed in his defensive play. He just didn't seem to be interested in playing defense. Did have a nice outside shot though, that the team can use, but IMO unless he plays defense he should not see the floor that much.

 

I think one of the biggest things that will help the colonels this year, is I fully expect to see much more TEAM play from them. Last year saw very little of that.

You have to take into consideration that last year was a fluke of a season for CCH. Going into the season they were ranked 2 or 3 in the region with two top 10 players in the region. People got sick and things fell apart. Imo, it really wasn't a reflection of what the team should have been. It was a complete struggle all season long and nothing ever clicked.

 

This year the Colonels have no option besides relying on team ball. There is no one on that team that can actually take the team on his back and carry the load. They are going to need consistent tough defense along with multiple people scoring. I think you will see in each games different players leading in scoring other than Jake Thelen. Imo, he will become their most consistent and dominant player. Look for his senior season to be a special one.

Is this a surprise? It is very typical for the defense to be lacking during summer games. Add that to the fact that he's coming from a new program and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

I was extremely disappointed when I watched the Colonels play the past 2 years due to their inability (or unwillingness) to play as a team. For years, Covington Catholic has relied on 8-10 guys, a great team effort & solid team defense. I saw none of that.

Yes it was a surprise when Coach Tranter would be on the sidelines getting the guys to play some D - an there was one player who was not doing it. Like I said, maybe, no hopefully he will be active defensively, and not just reach out with his hands like young kids do. We will see.

I think they'll take care of that.

 

Defense is hustle & effort. If you don't want to play defense, you don't want to play.

For the last two years, guys coming off the floor not receiving a handshake from the guys on the bench, guys visibly displaying displeasure when removed from the game, guys not giving up the ball, all kinds of signs of the colonels not playing TEAM ball have been there the last couple of years. You can not say last year was the first year for that. I do think this team will play more of the team ball and get to it defensively. If they do not, it will be a very long year.

I agree, and I said that they had not been playing team ball for a few years. Hopefully that is a thing of the past, and I think that it is.

 

What was their summer schedule like? The team & staff should already know how competitive they are with teams around the state.
