Cov. Cath. beat SK 9-0.

Highlands beat Holy Cross 10-1.

Are these scores over the top or acceptable? Did the coaches do anything in wrong or should they have managed the score a bit more?

Any thoughts?

Well with the scores this high I would imagine the second string players got in are you going to tell them to just run up and down the field and not attempt to score a goal . You could tell them that the ball has to be passed X number of times before they take a shot on goal , but it is up to the defense to stop them .

I know that Steve Spurrier is a college coach and this may violate the spirit of HS sports somewhat, but he was quoted saying "It's not my job to stop my team from scoring, that's the other team's job".

With that said, it can be more embarassing sometimes when a team tries not to score and it is noticeable. With the types of leads that both of these teams had, I'm sure that reserves were in the game. How do you tell a substitute not to try their best to be successful? They want the opportunity to show the coach that they can play also.

Soccer is a little different than basketball or football. There is a mercy rule. A ten goal advantage and the game is over. Ten goals in a very large margin, but at least you don't have to play keep away for an hour. You can get the ten goal margin and go home.

Please realize that the second string, or even the JV at a school like Notre Dame would beat some of the N Ky girls varsity teams by a 10 goal margin. The gap between the top tier teams and the bottom is huge. The better question would be, why are these games even on the schedule?

This morning after I saw the score, I sent an E-mail to a parent on the CovCath soccer team asking if the score were a type-o or was that the actual score? I then asked if the score were correct, was CovCath that good, or was SK that uncompetitive, or was it a combination of both?

The reply I got back said: "I think we look good, but this one may be because SK was over matched".

Now from what I read, five different kids scored the nine goals and seven different kids earned an assist!

Now if this were CovCath beating a small Dayton, Ludlow or a Silver Grove team this badly, then I would have been upset, but SK is a large 6A school while CovCath is a 4A size school.

You would think that a school the size of SK would have a more competitive team, but then again I just found out that Scott (Kenton County) just dropped their JV football team due to lack of numbers/interest.

It is my understanding that a boy from HHS that rarely sees the field had a hat trick last night so it was not as if the score was being run up. To answer Stinky's question regarding why Holy Cross is on the schedule, I believe it is because they are in the same division of the conference.

Even if you play your bench, I don't think it is fair to ask them not to score. That is the object of the game. I do think that it is good to have a mercy rule.

NDA needs to stop sending their JV and Freshman teams to play Varsity games...some of those girls won't make the Varsity team as Juniors at NDA and then they can't transfer to another school without sitting out a year because they have played a Varsity game...the AD knows this and should not be doing it anymore...it's a very short sighted thing to do! :irked:

If someone is even considering changing schools beacuse of athletics, they should not participate in a Varsity match as an underclassman (JV or Freshman teams). Alot of underclassmen get pulled up to play with the Varsity. IMO, changing schools because of athletics is very short sighted anyway. Isn't the education the most important thing??

You know, your post made me laugh......

BTW what other school do you want them to transfer to?

There is no reason for ND to stop sending their JV to play other Team's Varsity squads. The players and their parents know the rules and if they want to opt out, I'm sure the ND coaches would have no problem allowing the player to sit the game out. I'm betting that none on the JV do this though. The girls are Notre Dame Pandas not just soccer players. The main reasons these kids are at ND is not to play sports, that is simply a bonus. They go because of the friendships they have, the special uniqueness of an all girls High School, the strong academics and the faith based value system they are immersed in as a member of the Notre Dame Family.
